Today, we celebrate a pivotal date in an ongoing journey toward justice: June 19th, commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.

Juneteenth celebrates the reading of General Order No. 3 in 1865, announcing the freedom of more than 250,000 enslaved people in Texas—the last Confederate state to enforce emancipation. The order came over two years after Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and marked the first time many enslaved people learned of their freedom. Today, Juneteenth is celebrated nationwide as a symbolic date of African American liberation.

Exciting News! Our newest Discovery Cart, highlighting the sights, smells, and sounds of "California Indians," makes its public debut tomorrow, June 19, from 2–3 pm. 🎉

Staff and volunteers have been hard at work to prepare this new cart for visitors, bringing interactive experiences that engage all five senses! Smell aromatic scent jars, feel the intricate textures of woven baskets, learn natural fabric dye methods, and much more—all guided by one of our expert docents 🤩

Discovery Cart experiences are included with general Museum admission. Follow along on social media for the latest updates on when the "California Indians" cart will be out next!

This July, discover the family, food, and legacy behind Ikeda's Market in Auburn—one of California's most beloved roadside landmarks. Hear the Ikeda family story firsthand from Derek Ikeda, grandson of founders Sam and Sally Ikeda, who were among the more than 120,000 Japanese Americans incarcerated during WWII. Learn how they rebuilt their lives after the war to start the iconic market and then sample the famous Ikeda's pies and peaches 🤩

The California Museum mourns the passing of David Hockney, artist and member of the 9th class of the California Hall of Fame, who passed away yesterday, at the age of 88.

Painter, printmaker, stage designer, and photographer David Hockney was voted the most influential British artist of the 20th century by his peers. Two years after graduating from the Royal College of Art, London in 1962, Hockney visited Los Angeles. There, inspired by the light and color, he began creating stylized, color-saturated paintings of the landscape and swimming pools, which became his earliest successes. With a career spanning more than 50 years, Hockney received many awards, including the Order of the Companion of Honour and the Order of Merit. His work has been shown around the world, including at the L.A. County Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and Tate Gallery in London.

If you're wondering whether the box of Wheaties in our exhibit is actually a full, unopened box of cereal, we're here to confirm... it is! Fresh from 2004 and completely untouched (or more importantly, uneaten), this collector's item highlights iconic 19th Class inductee Carl Lewis. ⭐️

🏅Widely considered the greatest American track and field athlete, Carlton “Carl” Lewis dominated the sport in the 1980s and '90s, winning nine gold medals across four Olympic Games.

Stop by and see this Wheaties box and other artifacts celebrating Lewis' legacy in our 19th Hall of Fame exhibit on view at the California Museum.

This Pride Month, we're celebrating LGBTQ+ trailblazers and inductees Phyllis Lyon & Del Martin! 🌈

When Phyllis Lyon and Dorothy “Del” Martin became the first same-sex couple legally married in California in 2008, their union marked a historic milestone in the fight for LGBTQ+ equality.

Their story began more than 50 years earlier in Seattle, where they met in 1950 while working as journalists and fell in love. After moving to San Francisco in 1953, they dedicated decades to advancing civil rights and equality as leaders in the LGBTQ+ and women's rights movements.

Learn more about Phyllis Lyon & Del Martin at the California Museum, who are featured in both "Women Inspire" and at the kiosk in the "California Hall of Fame."

Yesterday, we gathered to celebrate California Museum Executive Director Amanda Meeker, who is retiring after more than a decade leading the Museum and 28 years total with the California Museum.

Staff, volunteers, board members, and friends of the Museum came together to honor her remarkable leadership and lasting impact. We are deeply grateful for Amanda's vision, dedication, and commitment to sharing California's diverse stories with generations of visitors.
