Josè, Savanna, and Cameron represented the Spanish Military Hospital Museum at the Aviles Street Festival today with an 18th Century foil demonstration. Josè represented the second Spanish period and Cameron represented the British. 🇪🇸🇬🇧 Savanna invited members of the audience up to participate in duels. Thank you to the Ximenez-Fatio House Museum for hosting a wonderful event!

The Aviles Street Festival is in full swing! ✨💃🏽

Come on by and join the amazing businesses and historical landmarks of Aviles Street, the oldest platted street in the nation, as we celebrate St. Augustine’s connection to Spain.

The festival will include flamenco dancers, Spanish Hospital Military Museum reenactors performing a sword duel demonstration, an artisans market, poetry readings from the Flagler College Latin American Student Organization, live music, and more.

This event is free, family-friendly, and open to the public!

Check out this fun fact from UF Historic St. Augustine. ☎️ Do you know why St. Augustine’s area code is 904?

Did you know that Florida got its first telephone exchange in neighboring Jacksonville in 1880? In St. Augustine, commercial hookups and localized service grew significantly from 1890-1900s. In 1947, the entire state of Florida was assigned the 305 area code by American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T). In 1965, as St. Augustine was celebrating the 400th anniversary of its founding, the northern half of Florida was assigned area code 904.

Meet Our Docents 🌹 Katie is a longtime resident of St. Augustine and a local actress. She has been at the museum for almost a decade and finds it rewarding to teach an often unthought-of and sometimes maligned aspect of history. Katie is particularly fond of flowers, teas, and botany, which allows her to share her knowledge with you in the apothecary.

Meet Nicholas Wilson, owner of the Spanish Military Hospital Museum. 👋🏼

A St. Augustine native, Nicholas is passionate about researching Spanish Colonial Medicine, including the tools used during that time period. Over the years, he has acquired a sizable collection of medical antiques such as surgical instruments, prosthetics, military garb, and more. Nicholas is also the brains behind our Avilés Street Apothecary line of soaps, lotions, sprays, and grooming products, all of which he makes in-house.

The next time you stop by the Spanish Military Hospital Museum for a tour, make sure to say hi to Nicholas.

Did you know that Rose Hips have more Vitamin C than oranges? 🌹 For thousands of years, Rose Hips have been used by many civilizations as food and for medicine. They are nutrient dense and can be made into tea, jams, jellies, soups, and even w**e.

Historically, there is documentation of Rose Hips being used for toothaches, respiratory issues, fevers, and more.
