Did you know?đź’ˇ The journey to freedom in the U.S. spanned centuries. In 1738, more than 125 years before Juneteenth, Fort Mose in St. Augustine was established as the first free Black community in what would become the United States. Historians estimate 100 formerly enslaved people traveled south to Spanish Florida and made their homes at Fort Mose.

Fort Mose’s incredible story of freedom, courage and resilience is preserved and told for all time at Fort Mose Historic State Park.

As part of its mission to share the inspiring story of Fort Mose with the world, the Fort Mose Historical Society each year hosts a reenactment of the Battle of Bloody Mose. Donning full militia gear and operating replica fi****ms, the militia depicts the 1740 British invasion of St. Augustine and the brave, surprise raid mounted by an alliance of Spanish, Natives and the Fort Mose militia at Fort Mose Historic State Park.

This year’s event is set for Saturday, June 27, with reenactments scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Admission is free.

Whether you are already familiar with Fort Mose or are just discovering this story for the first time, the Battle of Bloody Mose reenactment is a perfect occasion to honor and reflect on the meaning of freedom.

The St. Augustine Lighthouse was the second lighthouse, built from 1871-74 while the first lighthouse was still standing.

The first lighthouse was built in the 1700s of coquina by Spain, who also used wooden watchtowers. It became an official U.S. lighthouse in 1824. It fell into the ocean by 1880.

♥️THANK YOU, BREWERS’ FEST! The St. Augustine Craft Brewers’ Fest donated $10,500 to the nonprofit St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum! The event was held on Saturday, May 3 at the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park — with 40+ museum volunteers donating 90 hours to help with the benefit event that gives back to the Lighthouse and other nonprofit organizations.

The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum Announces New Leadership Appointments

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum is celebrating the
successful completion of Jason Titcomb’s first year as Executive Director while welcoming Joseph Kent as the institution’s new Director of Curatorial Affairs.

Kent joins the museum after serving at the Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas, where he
played a key role in developing engaging exhibitions, advancing historical interpretation, and supporting collections stewardship. His experience in museum leadership, public
history, and exhibit development will strengthen the Lighthouse’s commitment to preserving and sharing the region’s rich maritime heritage with audiences nationwide.

“We are excited to welcome Joe to the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum,” said
Jason Titcomb, Executive Director. “His leadership experience in museums including
exhibits, collections, and public engagement will strengthen our efforts as we continue to

💡✨ Fresnel lens viewing!
The St. Augustine Lighthouse Fresnel lens is a massive assembly of glass and brass and is understandably in an enclosed, protected space at the top of the tower. Access is limited to required maintenance and special circumstances.

The only chance for a visitor to go inside the Lens Room is on a private tour.

Despite its protected location, there is a great viewing area that many visitors don’t notice — but all who climb can see!

At the top of the iron staircase, visitors have a choice. Most people opt to take a left turn and step out onto the observation deck of the Lighthouse. Of course, this is an excellent choice as the view is amazing. But if you instead decide to keep walking straight at the top of the stairs, just a few more steps will take you to a wonderful floor-to-ceiling viewing area for the Fresnel lens.

Guests can peer through a panel and see inside the lens … and get an appreciation for the work that went into making and operating this optical marvel!

In 1589 Italian cartographer (mapmaker), Giovanni Battista Boazio published his map of the raid of Sir Francis Drake on St. Augustine three years earlier. The map is the first documented archival reference of a wooden watchtower at the end of Anastasia Island. The watchtowers were erected by the Spanish crown during the building of the Castillo De San Marcos to keep enemy ships from taking Anastasia Island. The watchtower at the north end of the island eventually became the St. Augustine Lighthouse, and the one at the sound end became Fort Matanzas National Monument.
