This fantastical lion is an aquamanile. In the medieval era, they were used to pour water for ritual hand washing. This example would have also served as a status symbol for its owner.

But its story doesn’t end in the Middle Ages.

In the early 20th century, it was owned by Baron Maximilian von Goldschmidt-Rothschild. In 1938, he was forced to sell the aquamanile, along with his entire art collection, to the Museum für Kunsthandwerk in Frankfurt by the N**i regime.

In 1949, his family successfully invalidated the forced sale, restituting the collection back into their possession. They then made the decision to sell it, and the de Young acquired the aquamanile in 1954.

On International Provenance Research Day, we recognize the importance of tracing the full histories of the works we steward, acknowledging not only their artistic significance but also the journeys that brought them here.

[“Aquamanile (ewer),” 1250–1300]
