Our vision is to be the premier destination to experience cartoon art in all its many forms from around the world, and a leader in providing insight into the process of creating it. Through exhibitions, artist appearances, and community outreach programs, the museum demonstrates how cartoon art entertains, communicates diversity, and champions self-expression. Our History

In 1984, a group of cartoon art enthusiasts began organizing exhibitions by using artwork from their own collections. For several years, the Cartoon Art Museum was a “museum without walls,” setting up shows in local museums and corporate spaces. Schulz, the museum established residence in the heart of San Francisco’s new vibrant art center, Yerba Buena Gardens. In the museum’s 37-plus years of existence it has produced over 200 exhibitions and 30 publications celebrating and examining the diversity of cartoon art in animation, comics, graphic novels, zines, book illustration, and more.

Beginning in 1956, the eatery's iconic suspender-wearing mascot starred in 'The Adventures of Big Boy,' a free, long-running promotional comic book whose early contributors included Stan Lee, Bill Everett, Sol Brodsky, and Dan DeCarlo.
