Gene Holtan (1930-2016) created a body of work which is a declaration of energy and life. Instructions for Arrival opens April 16, 2026. The works are a visual dance that invite reflection. In his final fifteen years, Holtan turned entirely to painting, leaving narrative for abstraction. The works from this period, presented here, reveal an artist liberated from constraint in an open channel.

This Gene Holtan exhibition will open on April 16, 2026 in the north gallery of Nelson Duni, alongside Jane Ivory’s A Language of Respect, also opening the same evening.

We’re grateful to SquareCylinder and critic Mark Van Proyen for a deeply considered review of our current exhibition of Elmer Bischoff.

"It is one of those rare instances where we find a museum quality exhibition in a commercial gallery."

The exhibition remains on view through March 15, 2026.
Read the full review on SquareCylinder.

Elmer Bischoff's late-career return to abstract painting was not only courageous, but prescient in that it anticipated what would variously be called Provisional Painting or Discrepant Abstraction three decades later.

Thank you Galerie Magazine for including Elmer Bischoff at Nelson Duni in "The Best Exhibitions to See Around San Francisco During FOG Design + Art." It was an honor to be part of SF Art Week, a city-wide showcase, from museum exhibitions to local gallery programs. San Francisco is still buzzing with must-see art experiences right now, as highlighted in Galerie’s roundup, and we’re proud to be part of the conversation.

We are honored to present the work of Elmer Bischoff, one the Bay Area’s most influential painters.
An exhibition spanning five decades, the show brings together over 30 paintings and drawings. This is a rare opportunity to encounter the quiet power of a seminal artist who helped shape San Francisco’s art history.
We will open January 22, 2026 during SF Art Week. Opening and exhibition information here: https://nelsonduni.com/exhibitions/elmer-bischoff

Congrats to Jerry Ross Barrish. We’re honored to celebrate "Jerry Ross Barrish: A Life in Film and Art", a retrospective at BAMPFA (Dec 6-14, 2025) marking the museum’s acquisition of Jerry’s three feature films and the Plastic Man documentary.

I’m honored to announce that the Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive has acquired my 3 features, Dan’s Motel (1981), Recent Sorrows (1984) and Shuttlecock (1989), and the “Plastic Man” documentary.

From December 6-14, 2025, BAMPFA will present “Jerry Ross Barrish: A Life in Film and Art”, a retrospective series of my journey across independent film and found object assemblage.

Thank you to BAMPFA for acquiring these works and for offering this platform to reflect on art-making.

Many thanks to William Farley, Michael Fox, Kate MacKay, Janis Plotkin, Jon Shibata, and everyone who helped bring this to life. I’m humbled and grateful.

The featured artists include Jerry Ross Barrish, Gary Bukovnik, Lake Heckaman, Gene Holtan, Jane Ivory, Paul Madonna, Nancy Mona Russell, and Mark Sommerfeld. Each artist's practice offers a unique perspective, contributing to a collective meditation on awareness and the poetics of the everyday. Thanks to everyone who has supported this vision. We are grateful and excited for the future. This Must Be the Place is now on view through November 14, 2025. You're invited.

Dear Friends,
We are excited to share the opening of Nelson Duni, our new art gallery in San Francisco’s Mission District.
As siblings, we’ve long shared a love of art and the belief that it can help shape how we feel and connect with the world. In partnering, we recognized an opportunity to create a gallery that honors legacies, supports artists, and contributes to the cultural vibrancy of San Francisco.
Nelson Duni is a space rooted in family and open to global conversations.
Follow along as we prepare to open doors with our inaugural exhibition This Must Be the Place, opening October 17, 2025.
With gratitude,
Lucy & Andy
