Camp Robinson, Arkansas
Where Soldiers Began Their War

During World War II, Camp Robinson in Arkansas served as a major U.S. Army training center.

Hundreds of thousands of young men passed through this camp, completing basic training before deployment to the European and Pacific theaters of war.

Life at Camp Robinson was demanding. In winter, soldiers trained and lived in simple wooden barracks, enduring cold weather, strict discipline, and long days of preparation. For many, these months marked the transition from civilian life to military service.

Among them were Chinese American soldiers, who entered the U.S. Army at a time when full equality was still denied to them at home.

Here, at Camp Robinson, their journey into the war —
and into American history — began.

Happy 101st Birthday (Happy 1st Birthday!) to Wing Y Lai
Happy 101st Birthday—or as you so delightfully put it, Happy 1st Birthday as you begin your second century!
Your wonderful sense of humor and youthful spirit are as inspiring as your distinguished service with the 14th Air Service Group, 555 Air Service Squadron in the China-Burma-India Theater. As part of the legendary Flying Tigers, you were instrumental in supporting the operations that helped forge the enduring friendship between the United States and China during one of history's most critical moments.
The CBI Theater may have been called the "forgotten theater," but the courage and dedication of servicemen like you will never be forgotten. Your contributions to the war effort and the legacy of the Flying Tigers continue to inspire us all.
Beginning this new century of your life at "one year old" shows the same indomitable spirit that carried you through your service decades ago. May this special year bring you continued health, happiness, and joy surrounded by those who love and admire you.
Thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and for reminding us all to embrace life with humor, grace, and an unwavering spirit.
With deepest respect and warmest birthday wishes,

In the darkest hours of China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, when cities like Chengdu, Chongqing, and Kunming endured relentless bombing campaigns, an extraordinary international partnership emerged to change the course of history. The year was 1941, and as China faced its most vulnerable moment, a group of American aviators and Chinese compatriots joined forces to create what would become legendary—the Flying Tigers.
