Eliza Lutz: All the Lives Alive Inside Me

The piece featured in this video and images is entitled Fruits of our Labor, a 36 x 52 Appliqué quilt with hand embroidery. This piece was conceived of and created during a period of immense transition in the artist’s life – after years of caretaking for three aging family matriarchs, all unexpectedly passed away within five months of each other. Fruits of Our Labor is a meditation on the reciprocity of intergenerational care and made from clothing and fabric scraps passed down to the artist. This exhibition is “a love letter to this lineage and my place within it, a celebration of carework’s intimate and temporal textures.”

Opening Saturday night, September 5th: Borrowed Stardust, a solo show of handbuilt sculptural vessels by Santa Fe-based ceramicist b. brown. 5-7pm.

brown set out to loosen up and get more gestural, but the pieces that emerged are, in her words, "perhaps, the most constructed works I've ever produced." Two forms grew alongside each other, one pushing a cylinder toward the edge of stability, the other asking what a bowl becomes when you take away almost all its containment. Halfway through, she realized a quieter conversation ran underneath them both: loss and grief.

Every piece is 12 x 12 inches, which keeps the work affordable and lets us hang a wide range of artists side by side — including work we don't usually get to show. It's a chance to bring home something original during the holidays, whether you're collecting for the first time or adding to a wall you've been building for years.

New paintings by Mirel Fraga in the gallery, link in the bio!

Mirel builds her mandalas the way she builds everything: color first. Symmetrical, carefully arranged, tuned until the whole composition vibrates. She works through repetition, stacking shapes and colors into something balanced enough to hold her. "My work is closely related to my mental health, so I'm always looking for harmony through the repetition of shapes and colors," she says. For her, painting is a spiritual activity and a transformative ritual, a way toward being at peace with herself.

In this episode with Eliza Lutz, we talk about their solo exhibition, All the Lives Alive Inside Me and both the metaphorical and literal meanings of that title.

Merging embroidered prints on paper with quilted portraits assembled from loved ones' clothes, the works in this exhibition chronicle the giving and receiving of care in all its forms, from child rearing to elder care, from domestic arts to community organizing.

"The show is called All the Lives Alive Inside Me, which more recently feels literal, but started incredibly abstract... Where you think you're going is never where you end up, and that's sometimes my favorite part."

"I feel my work is definitely in that continuum path of my ancestors [who] viewed and interpreted the world around us in geometric ways. They symbolize the mountain as a triangle. They symbolize stars and the moon and sun as disks. I want to continue that way of thinking, and so I'm symbolizing my experiences and things I see in two-dimensional form on drawings."
