This aquatint by Letterio Calapai, currently on view as part of “Space and the Sacred: Letterio Calapai’s Prints” was created four years after President John F. Kennedy announced his intentions to send an American to the moon before the end of the 1960s. His address to Congress in 1961 made the moon a figurative and a literal target for humankind, and in no small part, due to the Soviet’s own space-based aspirations: just one month earlier they sent the first man into space.

This framed hanging scroll was created by the renowned contemporary Chinese artist Fan Zeng (b. 1938) in the summer of 1987. The standing scholar, a middle-aged man holding a writing brush in his right hand, is shown in intimate eye contact with a goose. This human-animal duo presents a classic iconography in East Asian art: “Wang Xizhi Observing Geese.” Wang (c. 303–c. 361) was a fourth-century Chinese politician and artist celebrated as the “Sage of Calligraphy.” He is commonly pictured alongside geese, as legend has it that Wang’s organic, expressive calligraphic brushwork was inspired by studying how geese turn their necks, translating their graceful movements into the smooth turning of his own wrist.

Reclaimed: The Art of Recology opens in the Joe and Emily Lowe Galleries next Tuesday, Sept. 1!
 
See the work of 33 different artists who have all been selected to participate in Recology San Francisco’s coveted Artist-in-Residence program. Armed with safety gear and a shopping cart, artists have scavenging privileges in the Public Reuse and Recycling Area — what most artists refer to as “The Big Store” — to recycle and reclaim the discarded waste as reimagined art objects.
 
We are thrilled to bring Reclaimed to the Syracuse campus and can’t wait for you to see it.
