10000 times me- and yet I live in the desert😩

Some people hear rain and think about gray skies, canceled plans, and gloomy days.

Others hear it and finally feel at peace.

There is actually a word for people who are especially drawn to rainy weather: pluviophile. The word comes from the Latin pluvia, meaning rain, combined with -phile, meaning someone who loves or has an affinity for something.

For a pluviophile, rain can be comforting in ways that are hard to explain until you experience it. There is the steady sound against windows, the cooler air, the darker sky, and that unmistakable smell that rises from the ground after rainfall.

That earthy scent even has a name: petrichor. The term was coined in 1964 by Australian scientists Isabel Joy Bear and Richard Thomas. Later research from MIT helped explain part of the smell by showing how raindrops hitting porous surfaces can create tiny bubbles that burst and release aerosols into the air.

And the sound of rain may be part of the appeal too. Research into natural soundscapes has found that certain natural sounds can have stress-reducing effects, although people naturally respond to them in different ways.

So while one person might look outside and see a miserable, overcast day, someone else may see exactly what they were hoping for.

A quiet afternoon.

Rain against the window.

The smell of wet earth.

And weather that feels less like gloom and more like home.
