Ever wondered how to tell a maple from an oak after the leaves have fallen? Join Hidden Lake Gardens Education Coordinator Carley Kratz and Bob Birch from the Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute for an engaging introduction to Tree Identification. 🌳🍁

Participants will learn to recognize common tree species used for lumber, including maple, oak, birch, and pine, by exploring leaf shapes, bark textures, growth habits, and habitat clues. Discover the unique characteristics and uses of lumber produced from each species discussed.

🍂 Celebrate the first weekend of fall at HHidden Lake Gardens Join us for two exciting opportunities to explore, learn, and enjoy the beauty of the season:

🌾 Friday After Five – September 25

Enjoy an evening at the Gardens, open until 7:00 p.m.! From 5:30–6:30 p.m., Hidden Lake Gardens Managing Director Paul Pfeifer will lead a walk-and-talk on how ornamental grasses bring movement, texture, and stunning fall color to the landscape. Included with admission.

🌿 Invasive Shrub Management with LCD & GRCC Walking Tour – September 26

Learn how to identify and manage common invasive shrubs with Education Program Coordinator Carley Kratz, alongside local conservation experts. This hands-on program will provide practical techniques, real-world experiences, and valuable insights for landowners and nature enthusiasts alike. Space is limited, so registration is encouraged.

🍁 Whether you're looking for a relaxing evening stroll or a chance to build your conservation knowledge, Hidden Lake Gardens has something for everyone this weekend!

Fall is calling... how will you answer?

The first days of autumn bring cooler breezes, changing leaves, and a chance to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the season.

Beginning September 22, the autumn equinox marks the transition of summer moving into fall. This also marks the day when we have 12 hours of sunlight and 12 hours of night. Our daylight hours will be shorter and shorter until we reach the winter solstice on December 21.

Looking for a way to celebrate this equinox? Come take a hike by our sundial in the Arboretum area, or celebrate with us during our Autumnal Equinox festivities on Sunday, September 20. This family-friendly event will include story time, a seasonal craft and snack, and a guided hike.
