The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp (1955-1961) Hugh O’Brian’s TV series brought it into homes every week. The premiere episode of "The Life & Legend of Wyatt Earp," with Hugh O'Brian starring as the legendary Old West lawman. This episode first aired on September 6, 1955.
Writers love it because it’s a perfect 3-act story in 30 seconds. Clear sides, stakes, and that It’s the ultimate showdown: law vs outlaws, friends vs enemies, life and death in 30 seconds. It's the first Western television series written for adults, premiering just four days before GUNSMOKE on 6 Sept. 1955. The half-hour, black-and-white program aired for six seasons (229 episodes) on ABC from 1955 to 1961, and featured Hugh O'Brian in the title role. O'Brian was chosen for the role in part because of his supposedly physical resemblance to early photographs of the real Wyatt Earp. Although highly fictionalized, this TV series actually followed the chronological life of Wyatt Earp, with his moves through Kansas towns and on to Tombstone, Arizona Territory. It is unique among Westerns of the time in following a timeline throughout the entire series. This show, along with GUNSMOKE (1955) helped launch a great era of the TV Western. Westerns became so popular on TV that by the end of the 1950s, there would be as many as 40 Westerns in prime time! Come see the real thing at the O.K. Corral!

On September 8, 1881: The Tombstone Epitaph reports growing tension between the Earps and the Cowboys.
In 6 weeks, it would explode at the O.K. Corral.
Newspapers were competing at the time with opposing perspectives and they helped turn a 30 second shootout into an American legend.
The Tombstone Daily Nugget was supportive of the Clanton and McLaury cowboys while the Tombstone Epitaph supported the Earps.
Doc Holliday would arrive into Tombstone from Tucson only a few days later.

Just yesterday was a famous birthday for a wild west legend! Doc Holliday was born August 14, 1851 in Griffin Georgia, 175 years ago. He only lived to 36. He died November 8, 1887 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

He must've been watching over the cast of the O.K. Corral, as the gunfight reenactors just won 1st place for best gunfight show in Tombstone!

Come see our rated number 1 show, open everyday! The most famous gunfight in wild west history reenacted right next to where it really happened. Open everyday except Thanksgiving and Christmas.

From 1955-1961, Hugh O’Brian strapped on the badge and brought Tombstone’s famous marshal into living rooms across America. The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp!
With that iconic theme song, the show made Earp a household name for a whole generation. It ran for 6 seasons, 229 episodes, and was one of the first “adult westerns” on TV.
No CGI, no shortcuts. Just black-and-white grit, frontier justice, and the story of how one lawman tried to tame the Wild West. This show helped further cement the wild west as one of the most romanticized settings in Hollywood. O’Brian carried an exaggerated 12-inch Buntline Special Earp was said to use. This wasn't the actual gun Wyatt used but it helped grow the fantasy of the American West.
The real Josephine Earp consulted on the show to keep Wyatt’s legacy straight.

The Woman Behind the Legend: Josephine Sarah Marcus Earp

Everyone knows Wyatt Earp Tombstone marshal, O.K. Corral gunslinger, Wild West icon. But not as many know the woman who stood by him for nearly 50 years?
Josephine "Sadie" Marcus was no frontier wallflower. She was a dancer, traveler, and sharp-witted partner who met Wyatt in Tombstone in 1881. From the Arizona Territory to Alaska gold rush camps to Hollywood, she was by his side through boomtowns, busts, and legend-making.

After Wyatt’s death in 1929, she guarded his legacy. Josephine worked with authors, pushed back on myths, and made sure the Wyatt Earp we remember wasn’t just a gunfighter but her husband.

She lived a true Wild West love story: scandal, adventure, loyalty, and grit. The photo made famous by claiming to be her is actually someone else from a completely different country and decade.

The original director of the movie Tombstone was Kevin Jarre, who had also written the script. It was a good enough script to attract a lot of talent, like Kurt Russell, Bill Paxton, Michael Biehn, etc. But it was Kevin Jarre's direction that caused trouble. Michael Biehn liked Kevin Jarre, but said as a director, he was "rigid". Kevin Jarre, was replaced by George P. Cosmatos due to his inability to handle the logistical challenges of the film and keep the production on schedule. While Jarre was a talented writer and had a strong vision for the film, his lack of directing experience led to him being overwhelmed by the demands of the production. The actors, particularly Kurt Russell, significantly influenced the direction of the film, and it is suggested that Russell played a key role in streamlining the script and focusing on the Earp-Holliday relationship.
