The Bird Cage Theatre (The Official Site)

Step inside Tombstone’s legendary 1881 Bird Cage Theatre—once a theater, saloon and gambling hall. It is truely the last of a bygone era of western history.

The Bird Cage Theatre was a combination of a Saloon, Gambling Hall, House of ill repute, and Theatre. The New York Times wrote that the Bird Cage was the wildest wickedest night spot between Basin Street and the Barbary Coast. There were 16 Gun and Knife fights that left over 140 bullet holes through out the building. The Bird Cage hosted the wests longest poker game lasting 8 years 5 months and

3 days. The Bird Cage is ground zero for paranormal activity. It is one of the most haunted bulidings in the west. We have had many paranormal investigations that come to investigate the hauntings of this building.

On behalf of our entire crew we want to thank you all for your interest in the history of the old West and the Bird Cage Theatre! You guys rock!!! Regarding yesterday´s little coffin riddle: Most of you were absolutely right. A glass window coffin was for viewing mainly but also a business thing for the undertakers. Quite often a dead body was found and nobody knew who the person was as new folks moved into town every week. Viewing him in the morgue for a day or two (before it got too "smelly") increased chances that someone would recognize the person walking by the window of the morgue and therefor, the chances that someone would pay the embalming and funeral. Attached a photo of our foldable mortician table.

As you see we have one of the Tombstone movie coffins in our museum. Question for you all. Why do you think did some of the undertaker´s coffins have this glass window. Little hint: Folks were not really buried in such a coffin with "window". Can you guess?
