Rick Bartow (Wiyot, 1946-2016) is one of my favorite artists and this is his piece “The Magical Mind in Rural America” at the de Young Museum. One thing that I find so interesting about Bartow is that lived most of his life under the impression he was of Yurok descent. It wasn’t until he was in his 50s that he was contacted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and informed that he wasn’t Yurok at all. Bartow learned that his tribal ancestry could be traced back to the Mad River Band of the Wiyot tribe and that a horrific attack by American settlers in 1860 massacred the tribe and displaced his ancestors leading to generations of confusion about cultural identity. This painting has many elements that communicate the complicated emotions behind such a revelation. The masked individual with the antlers is actually a self portrait showing Bartow dancing in the Wiyot world Renewal Ceremony, showing his enthusiasm and joy for discovering the truth of his ancestry.

Lost to the Shadows, Found By the Light is the biggest painting that Amery Bohling has ever done. This monumental oil on linen panel depicts the dramatic shifting light of the Grand Canyon, something that Amery has painted countless times throughout her career. It measures 45 x 66 in and serves as a window into one of the most spiritual, awe inspiring places on planet earth.

Van Gogh’s series of sunflower paintings are some of my favorite paintings that exist. This particular piece from 1888 is among 4 that he completed in a single week. If you are an artist and you find a subject matter that resonates, don’t be afraid to paint it again and again and again.

Ralph Tawangyaouma (Hopi, 1906-1973) was a master silversmith responsible for making truly remarkable pieces of jewelry. He’s an excellent example of an artist changing their signature (or in this case hallmark) throughout their art career.
