Next weekend, don't miss "All You Can Write Is What You See," an all-ages creative writing workshop. The workshop will give participants an overview of Woody's biography and his music as written work, focusing on his lyrics and how they were derived from personal and learned experiences.

An opportunity to hone creative writing skills and learn more about our society, country and people, participants will have the opportunity to "write what they see" by examining current events and using the creative process to write their own lyrics or prose.

77 years ago today, the rescheduled Peekskill concert by Paul Robeson was held after an earlier concert was scheduled and devolved into violence known as the Peekskill riots. Woody and Pete Seeger were among those in attendance at the rescheduled show a week later in support Robeson. Reports indicated that Guthrie pinned a red shirt to the car window they were driving in to prevent glass from shattering as rocks were thrown at them. Woody went on to write many songs about the event, including "My Thirty Thousand," recorded by Wilco and Billy Bragg and released on their 2013 album of Woody Guthrie-penned songs, "Mermaid Avenue, Vol. III."

In case you missed it, the Common Chords concert series is back starting on Saturday, Sept. 19. Join us for an evening of music from monster blues guitarist and singer-songwriter Jack Hadley. North Mississippi drone electric blues meets Jimi Hendrix in Hadley’s music, who will be performing music from his 2020 release “Daybreak in Alabama – The Langston Hughes Project.” Hadley’s music is steeped in the Blues, the history of Black people, social justice and love.

"All You Can Write Is What You See," an all-ages creative writing workshop, is coming to the Woody Guthrie Center on Sept. 12, at 2 p.m. The workshop will give participants an overview of Woody's biography and his music as written work, focusing on his lyrics and how they were derived from personal and learned experiences.

The title is taken from notes Guthrie scrawled at the bottom of the original handwritten lyrics to his most famous and beloved song, "This Land Is Your Land." A return to observational writing, the workshop is an opportunity to hone creative writing skills and learn more about our society, country and people. Participants will have the opportunity to "write what they see" by examining current events and using the creative process to write their own lyrics or prose.
