What is the Union City Cornerstones Historic Walking Tour?

Come find out on June 13th from 2–4 PM at Union City Middle School! It’s FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

The Union City Society for Historic Preservation has a grand vision for Union City, and the public is invited to a FREE presentation introducing an exciting plan for an educational, cultural, and historical walking tour celebrating the stories that shaped our community.

In partnership with the Village of Union City, MEDC, Union Township, America250, and the Network to Freedom Trail, this project will connect Union City through memorials, murals, sculptures, interactive education, local history, and public art.

A major focus of the tour is using educational experiences to promote local history in meaningful and engaging ways. Through school partnerships, youth involvement, and hands-on learning opportunities, the tour will help students connect with their community's history while inspiring them to become storytellers, guides, artists, and preservation leaders.

The tour will also help make Union City a destination beyond our own community by creating a welcoming historic destination for families, schools, visitors, and heritage travelers.

Highlights of the tour will include Union City’s powerful connection to the Underground Railroad, the role of Union City Schools in educating and inspiring future generations, the history of the St. Joseph River, and the stories preserved within Riverside Cemetery, where many people who shaped our village are remembered.

Another important part of the tour will be a meaningful memorial to honor the victims of the March 6th tornado and to recognize our community's strength, loss, and resilience.

Visitors will discover stories of courage, education, preservation, tragedy, resilience, and community pride while learning how these important locations connect to Union City's broader history.

We will also have author and special guest speaker Robin Foster, who has personal ties to Union City's Underground Railroad history. Her ancestors were Freedom Seekers who found refuge in Union City on their way to Canada.

Learn how you can help, become involved, and support the Union City Cornerstones Historic Walking Tour as it brings history to life, strengthens youth engagement, and enriches the quality of life throughout our village.

Many thanks to the dedicated volunteers who made today’s Riverside Cemetery cleanup a triumph! We ushered in spring with purpose; while the main tree near the meteor remains to be cleared at a later date, the momentum gained today propels us forward. Join us on May 23/24th for our stone repair workshop, which is sponsored by the Union City Society for Historic Preservation.

We will be meeting by the vault this Saturday at 9 am. We probably won’t need that long to get the job done- perhaps finishing by noonish.
We plan on stacking branches along the lane edges. This makes for easier pickup for the mowing crews this spring.
Please RSVP if you plan on coming so we know how many to expect.
Please bring any gloves, rakes or wheelbarrows if you have any.
We are not cutting up the big tree- the township has hired someone to do this. This is not a cemetery repair event. It is just clean up and recovery of any lost items.

See you Saturday. ☺️

The interior of the Walsh and Engle Carriage house is coming together thanks to SHP member Craig Adolph. We are thrilled with the look and are ready for the flooring to be installed next.
We are grateful to our sponsors, Branch County Community Foundation and Southern Michigan Bank for the grants to finish up this work.
We also are thankful to Craig, who has been putting in long hours to get these walls up before the end of the year.
We are looking for any items associated with carriages, doctors, or other UC related donations to be exhibited in this space.
We plan on having tours of the building in the spring when it’s completed.
