Many thanks to everyone who brought their Dads and families to the Whippany Railway Museum on Sunday, June 21st, Father's Day. It turned out to be a great day for everyone, and all trains were sold out. Special thanks to the folks at the Morristown & Erie Railway, who displayed their newly painted America250 locomotive No. 26, "Washington's Headquarters" at Whippany for the day.

Many Americans remember the American Revolution Bicentennial which was observed throughout 1976. During this year of America250, discover the Whippany Railway Museum's newest exhibit, which shares the story and mementos related to the American Freedom Train (AFT) of 1975 - 1976. The AFT made a display stop at nearby Morristown, NJ at the Mennen Sports arena from July 23-25, 1976, where thousands lined up each day to see the train and its historic contents.

In addition to the American Freedom Train display, the Museum's operating model railroad features an O gauge version of the AFT, as well as a patriotic-themed model freight train with locomotives painted in Bicentennial-era colors.

Come to the Museum to see this historic display before it's too late.

It appears that the weather may be a bit "ify" here in Eastern Morris County this coming Sunday (April 26th), but the Whippany Railway Museum will be open, and you can enjoy the many historic railroad exhibits and artifacts on display indoors. Our very popular O-gauge model railroad will be in operation as well.

t was 50 Years Ago Today - April 1, 1976 (a Thursday), when the face of railroading in the Northeastern United States was changed forever with the startup of Conrail, which took over the operations of six bankrupt rail carriers: Penn Central, Erie Lackawanna, Lehigh Valley, Central Railroad Company of New Jersey, Reading Company, and the Lehigh & Hudson River Railway.

Three photos are attached, taken by Denville, NJ resident (the late) Bill Young. Bill captured a series of views in the early years of Conrail trains passing through his hometown on former Erie Lackawanna (ex-DL&W) trackage.

In the days following the startup, Conrail placed ads in newspapers throughout the Northeast proclaiming: "Announcing ConRail. A better way to run a railroad." (note the original spelling of ConRail - for Consolidated Rail Corporation).
