The Great Northern Bar came to being in 1919, just fourteen years after Whitefish itself was incorporated (in 1905). Its original location was on the north side of 2nd street, and it moved to its current location in the fifties. This photo is circa 1965.
'The Northern' has cycled through a few different owners since then, but has always been a watering hole for locals, from the railroaders of its namesake to skiers, golfers, blue and white collar workers alike, and visitors seeking to unwind or hear good music amongst friendly locals. It’s a true and iconic anchor of the downtown and as we watch this historic moment unfold, we wish the Northern all the best in its new chapter—one of many in the unfolding tale of a beloved and storied place.
