Artist Luis Diaz loves the community he finds at the Chris White Gallery at Shipley Lofts. In this paint-brush interview, he seems genuinely pleased to be at the gallery with his art on the wall behind him. The gallery posts this video in hopes you will make a donation during DoMore24, a 24-hour fundraiser that starts Thursday, March 5 at 6pm, 2026.

In this video, Chad Williams, a poet and visual artist, talks about the importance of in-person experience, not only in exhibiting and viewing art, but also living in Shipley Lofts, a non-profit apartment building in downtown Wilmington, Delaware that offers 23 affordable apartments to artists with an on-premises art gallery. The Chris White Gallery hopes you will make a donation during DoMore24, a 24-hour fundraiser that starts Thursday, March 5 at 6pm, 2026.

🎨 When the Head Curator of the Delaware Art Museum wants to see what’s new in Wilmington’s artist community, she comes to Chris White!

Meet Margaret Winslow. Margaret and other curators from delartmuseum are frequent visitors to the Chris White Gallery, keeping a pulse on the local and emerging artists showing work in our space.

That’s not a small thing. A volunteer-powered, nonprofit gallery in downtown Wilmington catching the attention of one of the state’s most respected art institutions? That tells you something about what’s happening inside these walls.

Watch Margaret’s 31-second video to hear it in her own words. (And yes — that’s a paintbrush she’s holding, not a microphone. We can’t afford a mic. We make do. That’s kind of our whole thing.)

This is exactly why your donation matters.

The Chris White Gallery produces 6+ exhibitions a year — each one making space for a different story, a different community, a different creative tradition. No big budgets. No corporate sponsors. Just volunteers, artists, and a community that keeps showing up.

—— DoMore24 is Delaware’s largest day of giving, 24 hours, starting Thursday, March 5 at 6pm through Friday, March 6 at 6pm.

—— Goal: $4,000 to fund exhibitions for the rest of 2026

Did you know?

16 years ago, the Chris White Gallery was an abandoned building with caved in floors, busted windows and tree growing out into North Shipley Street.

A year later? A fully renovated five-story building with 23 affordable artist studios and a two-level gallery, made possible by a community that believed housing and art could transform a city block.

Days before the building’s completion was celebrated, Chris White, the attorney who led the renovation — was killed outside the building by a driver fleeing police. He left behind a wife and two young children.

The community named the gallery and the nonprofit in his honor.

And 16 years later, the Chris White CDC is still here — still volunteer-powered, still producing 6+ exhibitions a year, still making room for every artist and every story in downtown Wilmington.

Chris spent his career at Community Legal Aid Society fighting for equal access to justice. This gallery carries that same spirit; ensuring equal access to art, creativity, and community.

Your donation keeps his legacy alive.
