Did you know?
16 years ago, the Chris White Gallery was an abandoned building with caved in floors, busted windows and tree growing out into North Shipley Street.
A year later? A fully renovated five-story building with 23 affordable artist studios and a two-level gallery, made possible by a community that believed housing and art could transform a city block.
Days before the building’s completion was celebrated, Chris White, the attorney who led the renovation — was killed outside the building by a driver fleeing police. He left behind a wife and two young children.
The community named the gallery and the nonprofit in his honor.
And 16 years later, the Chris White CDC is still here — still volunteer-powered, still producing 6+ exhibitions a year, still making room for every artist and every story in downtown Wilmington.
Chris spent his career at Community Legal Aid Society fighting for equal access to justice. This gallery carries that same spirit; ensuring equal access to art, creativity, and community.
