Makena Simmons, a self-taught photographer, cites her parents and upbringing as central influences on her culture and artistic perspective.

After joining Jon Cox's class at the of Delaware on a whim, Makena used the cyanotype process to explore her experience as a Chinese American artist. By weaving together two cyanotypes from the same image, Makena created a woven work that symbolizes how identity is shaped through family and personal experiences.

📸 Find the Photovoice exhibition in Orientation Hall at to get a closer look at Makena's cyanotype and engage with global perspectives on culture and identity.

Author Elaine Goodale Eastman exerted significant influence on late nineteenth-century Native American education, promoting reservation education as a means of assimilating and strengthening entire communities.

Published in 1911, Eastman's novel "Yellow Star: A Story of East and West" follows Stella—also known as Yellow Star—a Lakota girl orphaned during the Wounded Knee Massacre and taken to a New England village to be raised. The novel, illustrated by Angel De Cora and her husband at the time, William “Lone Star” Dietz, explores tensions between assimilation and cultural survival, culminating in Yellow Star’s return to the West to teach children in her own community—a trajectory that reflects Eastman's educational work.

You can find a copy of "Yellow Star: A Story of East and West" at . Engage with the Living Indigenous exhibition across six gallery spaces through August 23, 2026.
