Moored in quiet dignity and majesty the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA, across the river from downtown Wilmington, beckons visitors to walk her decks. Envision the daily life and fierce combat her crew faced in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. From all across our Nation they came, young men who had grown up in the crucible of the Great Depression and now determined to serve their Country in its

time of need. These are the men whose stories you will encounter through their oral histories, photographs, and mementos as you experience the Ship and the exhibits. Step back in time and let history come alive through the crews’ stories. Imagine yourself steering the ship, starting her engines or even firing the guns. JOIN THE CREW and be a part of Battleship history at the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA!

When I moved up to executive officer from navigator on February 19, 1943, I became very interested in the ship’s brig. I found that a lot of deadbeats were being sent there where they could lie around and read comic books while their other shipmates were doing their work for them. I soon tried to ...

In 1944, USS NORTH CAROLINA faced one of the most violent storms of World War II. Former crew member Bob Wayne Noble, Boatswain’s Mate 2/c, later recalled the chaos and endurance required as the ship battled a powerful Pacific typhoon. His memories offer a firsthand glimpse into the realities of life at sea during wartime.

During our Memorial Day Observance yesterday, we highlighted the life and service of Mary Webb Nicholson, a native North Carolinian and aviator whose perseverance and impact are still felt today.
Read more about her here: https://battleshipnc.com/mary-webb-nicholson/

To be inspired by Mary's story, and the story of other women aviators during World War II, be sure to read "Spirtfires: The American Women Who Flew in the Face of Danger During World War II," by Becky Aiken. The book is now available in the Ship Store at the Battleship! Shipping is available.

Some jobs aboard the Battleship take teamwork—and a little creativity. Volunteers Leo and Bob B recently strung the rope connecting a life raft basket to the raft float they’ve been restoring, with one volunteer working underneath the raft and the other stretched across the top. Another piece of shipboard history, carefully brought back to life. We love our volunteers!
