Happy Birthday Dorothea Lange! Born on this day in 1895 she is remembered today as one of the most important documentary photographers in American history. Her photographs of different communities during the Great Depression have become inseparable from our collective memory of the era.

This image was made around the beginning of Ansel’s Guggenheim Fellowship in the late 1940’s. He wrote of Death Valley: "The experience is primarily one of light; heroic, sunlit desolation and sharp, intense shadows are the basic characteristics." On this day, Ansel set out before dawn, knowing all too well that the plodding walk through the dunes was slow, and "several times previously, [he] had struggled through the steep sands [. . .] only to find out [he] was too late for the light." After first photographing with 4x5 Kodachrome, he moved on to black-and-white film, making five exposures of the dune. The resulting scene is quite formal, relying on the "vigorous design" for its captivating nature.

So I can’t think of many things more symbolic of the United States than National Parks and sharing the nation’s most unique landscapes of geologic wonder, protected flora and fauna, and rich cultural heritage that all unites many millions of vacationing visitors each year." - James McGrew

Artist James McGrew first backpacked in Yosemite at just four months old and subsequent family camping/backpacking trips inspired an early interest in art and nature as he was constantly drawing and painting. Today he is best known for his oil paintings interpreting western National Parks. His background in natural sciences (degrees in biology, chemistry and geology and grad work for M.S. in Environmental Ed) help James to understand his natural subjects as well as to carry on the tradition of 19th century artists whose images helped to establish the first national parks.

In 1938, on an excursion through Yosemite Valley with Edward Weston, a fellow nature photographer and one of Ansel’s lifelong friends and creative partners, the pair found themselves face to face with the brilliant dogwood bloom. Perhaps it was Weston (a noted-still life photographer) who inspired Ansel to approach this scene as a still-life. Or perhaps it was the beautiful contrast between the bright starlight of the blossoms and the still-bare forest behind it. In any case, Ansel quickly arranged a nearby dogwood branch on top of a rock covered with pine needles and moss, set up his camera, and made this image of "Dogwood Blossoms."

Stripped of much artifice, this photograph was likely made during Ansel's visit to Ghost Ranch before his 10-day long journey with Georgia O'Keeffe, David McAlpin and the Rockefellers in 1937. Ansel had arrived early in New Mexico and before his fellow travelers. In the intervening days, O'Keeffe continued to paint her much beloved surroundings during the day, driving around in her "woodie" station wagon, and Ansel joined her on at least some of these jaunts to photograph the surrounding landscape.
