KURT KALB

We mourn the loss of a great protagonist and pioneer of the Austrian art and cultural landscape.

The young Kurt Kalb began trading in antiques and painting in the early 1960s without much previous training, but equipped with the necessary sensitivity. In 1972 he opened his first own gallery in Grünangergasse, which he turned into a place for the avant-garde. Especially the Viennese Actionists - Hermann Nitsch, Günter Brus, Otto Muehl - at that time less known for their artistic innovations than for actions that agitated and disturbed a then still conservative society, Kurt Kalb exhibited uncompromisingly and consistently.

Galerie Kalb remained true to its extravagant program in its rooms on Bäckerstraße, showing Maria Lassnig, Daniel Spoerri as well as Dieter Roth and Rudolf Polanszky, with whom the gallery owner shared a lifelong friendship.

Since the founding of the Konzett Gallery, Kurt Kalb has been an important mentor, friend and above all a role model for remaining an individualist and exhibiting art completely free of social conventions. We say goodbye with the greatest respect.

Arnulf Rainer‘s informal work 'Die Brücke' from 1951 is part of our collection and now on view ..
. the exhibition is dedicated to abstract expressionism and informalism, showing a huge work by Markus Prachensky which has not been exhibited in Vienna since the 1970s, and an amazing one by Lee Krasner who overpainted a work of her husband Jackson Po***ck, just to name two.
A visit is highly recommended if you happen to be in Vienna until the end of January.

From tomorrow, the exhibition “The Meal“ opens its doors in the Dom Museum in Vienna. Explore the influences of eating and drinking as basic human needs on the practice of visual artists across different decades.
We are pleased to be able to support this project with some loans from our collection.

'WAS IST DAS'

His drawings with wax crayon are colorful pictorial worlds in which the law of perspective, of proportions is suspended and reality is in a fluid relationship with fiction. With very few exceptions, the play with text and language is an essential, visible and eponymous part of the work. Recurring motifs and themes are houses, animals or anthropomorphic hybrid beings, love, s*x - and above all women.

'Was ist das' ('What is this'), the artist‘s first solo show at Konzett Gallery, assembles works from the past six years and - accompanied by a catalog - provides insight into the colorful universe of Martin Kastner.

Meeting musician Franz Koglmann and photographer Markus Mittringer.
On the occasion of Franz Koglmann’s 75th birthday this year we will publish an edition of photos Mittringer did of the Jazz musician. The presentation of the edition, a concert and a party will happen on May 25. We’ll keep you posted.

Happy Birthday Franz West!

In his work, the artist cultivated a very open approach to reciprocal artistic influences, appropriation and symbiosis. Consequently, the art of his friends played an essential role for him both in private and in his artistic practice.
