National Dinosaur Museum The National Dinosaur Museum is Australia's largest permanent display of prehistoric specimens. 🦕
(1373)

The National Dinosaur Museum is situated in Canberra, Australia's capital city. One of the premier tourist attractions in the area, the museum was established in 1993 and since then has grown into one of the largest permanent displays of dinosaur and prehistoric fossil material in Australia. New exhibits include 12 life-like animatronic dinosaurs and 20+ realistic replicas. There has never been a better time to visit the museum than at the moment!

Consider them Diproto-done! 🎨✨

In-house painters, Cole and Athena spent the entire day giving our resident Diprotodon duo a total glow-up in the Dino Garden!

Fun Fact: They often get mistaken for “just an oversized wombat” but they are actually TRUE TO SCALE wombats that lived in Australia 40000+ years ago and the LARGEST, known marsupial to ever roam the Earth— about the size of an average SUV (wouldn't want to hit one of these while driving) !🦘🚙🥲

Don’t forget to say hi to the newly painted pair and tag us in your photos on your next visit to the National Dinosaur Museum, Canberra!

🚨Dinosaur (Bird=Dinosaur) News Alert!🚨

Newly found extinct species of toothed bird from Richmond, Queensland, has upped the number of known Cretaceous Australian Birds from one to two!! 🪽

Thanks to Kevin Petersen from Kronosaurus Korner Museum, we have been introduced to Tenuicruris piscanexum - a bush turkey - sized bird, that lived in the same ecosystem of the Ichthyosaurs, Plesiosaurs, ancient turtles, Pterosaurs, Sharks and fish of the Eromanga Sea around 100 million years ago!🦴🌏

This find is of peak significance for understanding the ecological history and diversity of Australian prehistoric life! 🇦🇺

Throwback Thursday to when our upstairs gallery faced a whole new kind of apex predator... 🦆🦖

A few school holidays ago our upstairs gallery got quietly invaded by these little guys. We’re still not entirely sure who briefed them on prehistoric survival skills, but their placement was nothing short of fowl.

Rest assured, full safety inspections were conducted, and no ducks (or dinosaurs) were harmed during this takeover!😌🫶

The National Dinosaur Museum takes pride in being a tourist attraction but also a popular educational pit-stop for school groups ranging from pre-K to tertiary grades.🦖🤓

Our tour guides work early hours in the mornings and late hours at night (till 10pm on some occasions😮) to provide as much information on dinosaurs and prehistoric evolution, constantly keeping up to date with the ever-changing world of palaeontology to educate future generations while keeping tours fun and entertaining.🧑‍🏫🔎🧬

Each year we see thousands of students and teachers from across Australia walk through our galleries to learn. These numbers are constantly increasing which cannot be possible without the effort and knowledge of our highly reviewed tour guide team (snippets of feedback provided by teachers as seen in our photos).🤩

Shout out to the team! 📢🦖

🚨Dinosaur News Alert! 🚨

Diplodocus is a well-beloved sauropod dinosaur, with one of the loooooooooooongest tails. Up till now specimens have only been found in North America.

Spain is quite far from North America so how is this possible? LAND BRIDGE CONFIRMED!🌉

This discovery cements evidence of land bridges (now covered by the Atlantic Ocean) that connected to two continents, allowing the migration of dinosaurs during the late Jurassic period! 🦕🤩🌎

Have you seen a dinosaur nest in a dinosaur's mouth? Now you have! 🪺🦖

If you've visited the museum in the past few months, you might have noticed a very cheeky flash of red in and around our Dino Garden and near the giant T-rex "Stan".

This Crimson Rosella has made a home in Stan's mouth during the last few months and to our surprise we just noticed her baby this week, just in time for Spring!🐣🌸

Next time you visit NDM, you might get a chance to spot the Crimson Rosella family in the Big T-rex mouth. Make sure to take some photos and tag us!! 🦖📸

Oviraptors are most famous for fossilised remains preserving them incubating their eggs. Recent research suggests that just like emus, it may have been the father who incubated the nest, suggesting that Dino dad's played a key role in nest protection! 🥚

As like in the time of the Dinosaurs, paternal care is so important in bringing up young and we thank all the dads out there doing their best to be the best Father they can be!

Happy Father's Day! 🦖

An even bigger thank you is owed to every single diorama creator who all managed to exceed expectations and make this very very very hard on the judges. You are all officially the greatest Dino fans of them all. 🦕🦖💗

We hope each and every participant had a fun and engaging time making these beautiful pieces of science!
We can't wait to witness even more next time!
