What does an art gallery director do on a holiday? She has coffee in a cute cafe, checks out boutique art & design shops, photographs architecture and visits the Kyoto Arts Centre. Then a yummy lunch before heading back to the hotel. Loving Kyoto and all that it has to make experiences meaningful. Photos have more deets ☺️.

This is Miho Museum up in the mountains outside of Kyoto in the Shigaraki neighborhood of the city of Kōka, in Shiga Prefecture. It’s an art museum and architecturally striking from the moment you start to walk up via a tunnel which it alone was very artistic. Once inside, we saw the Tales of Ancient Gold. I don’t think it can get any better or bigger than Mt Fuji. A lovely elderly man bobbed his head so I could get photos from his window seat. He could see I was clearly a first time visitor. He told me wait to get closer shots and this is the one I landed with - he loved my photo. In my excitement I thought I was thanking him when in fact I was saying goodbye. His quizzical face meant a quick translation on google and I nearly fell over! I had confused Sayonara (which meant goodbye forever!) instead of saying Arigato (thank you). I quickly corrected myself and he was quite amused. A beautiful welcome to Japan - my first visit ever.

One of our lovely clients (and their dog 🐾) bought Mi: mini (Women). They loved the colours, story behind the painting and meeting Amanda at our private opening. I often invite visitors to our private opening as its a chance to enjoy a special evening with the artist/s in a relaxed setting - no one in Canberra can say their gallery opening is in a garage! Except ours is turned into a bar, music and carpet rolled out (grey pretending it’s red ☺️).

We are open 11am, Monday 4 May till 5pm and this will be your last day to visit in-person. My GOST news coming out this Tuesday will reveal what I’ll be doing over the coming months.

Raukkan (meeting place) holds a special meaning to Amanda. She tells us more, “Raukkan is a real and powerful place once known as Point McLeay Mission, before being handed back to the Ngarrindjeri and rightfully renamed Raukkan. This painting captures the colours, shapes and feeling of Country as I experience it when I visit Raukkan … Layers of memory, connection, and gathering.”. It’s available to suit your home or a corporate/commercial space.

The gallery is open 11-5 today through to Monday for last in person visits to see Amanda’s artworks and the shop. I’m going on a Winter break and more will be revealed in GOST news coming out Tuesday 5 May.

Both Amanda and I love this painting. To see it in person is even more special as the buttery yellows speak of a sun kissed country. Amanda tells us more about Nanggi Oba Ruwi, “This piece reflects the warmth of Ngarrindjeri Country, the soft yellows and dry tones speak to dry grass, heat and open landscapes”. It’s available to suit your home or a corporate/commercial space.

The gallery will be closed Thursday 30 April as I’ve been told to rest. Cross fingers it will go in 48 hrs with a good dose of antibiotics 🤞🏻. You can shop online anytime ☺️.

We are open this Monday 27 April from 11 to 5. Pop on in to see Amanda Westley’s first solo show of indigenous paintings in Canberra. We’ve had gorgeous Autumn days making it perfect to head out and enjoy your day off visiting Australia’s smallest gallery. Amanda tells us, “This piece represents Ngarrindjeri Country after rain, when Country comes alive with vibrant greens. The different shades are growth and renewal across Country and the life that water brings to Ngarrindjeri Ruwi”. It’s sold but we do have 4 paintings available to suit a home or corporate/commercial space.
