πŸ”§ Workshop Update: AAR2 Takes Centre Stage

This bird's eye view of our workshop shows AAR2 currently undergoing maintenance at Don River Railway.

The carriage itself sits in the centre of the workshop, while its bogies can be seen in the foreground undergoing overhaul and refurbishment before the vehicle returns to service. This important work will help ensure AAR2 remains a reliable part of our operational fleet for years to come.

One of the great things about visiting Don River Railway is the opportunity to see this work for yourself. Visitors are welcome to access the workshop mezzanine during our open days from Wednesday to Sunday, providing a unique behind-the-scenes view of restoration, maintenance and preservation projects currently underway.

There's always something happening in the workshop, and every visit offers a chance to see a different piece of Tasmania's railway heritage being cared for by our dedicated volunteers.

πŸš‚ Have you visited the workshop mezzanine before? Let us know what project caught your eye!

πŸ‘»πŸŽ Meet Evaline Vein... The Phantom of the Rails πŸŽπŸ‘»

Once upon a time, Evaline dreamed of becoming the greatest opera star the world had ever known.

Now, she's trapped aboard a railway carriage at Don River Railway... and she's determined to make sure somebody listens to her story.

During our Family Halloween sessions, Evaline is delightfully dramatic, wonderfully eccentric, and always eager to entertain young visitors with tales of her former glory. πŸŽƒβœ¨

But after 7pm, everything changes.

As the lights dim and the shadows grow longer, Evaline reveals the truth behind her tragic fate. The cheerful performer disappears, replaced by something much darker...

Something bitter.

Something vengeful.

Something that never quite forgave the audience that forgot her.

Will you meet Evaline during the day... or encounter her after dark? πŸ‘»πŸš‚

🎟️ Every Halloween admission includes ONE FREE Premium Experience Ticket, and Evaline Vein is one of the many characters waiting to meet you.

A familiar face on the front cover!

We're delighted to see Don River Railway's V2 featured on the cover of the October 2026 edition of Light Railways magazine, published by the Light Railway Research Society of Australia.

The photograph is particularly special, showing V2 alongside sister locomotive D1 at the West Coast Wilderness Railway, where V2 is currently on loan.

It's wonderful to see these historic Tasmanian locomotives featured together in a nationally recognised railway publication.

πŸ’• More Than 160 Passengers. More Than $1,600 Raised. One Incredible Community. πŸ’•

Today, Don River Railway proudly hosted our annual Pinktober Charity Train, bringing together supporters from across North West Tasmania in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our passengers, volunteers, and community supporters, we carried over 160 passengers and raised more than $1,600 for this important local cause.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Shirly Good and Penguin in Pink, along with The Fashion Treadmill and the many other supporters who help make this day possible each year. Your dedication continues to make a real difference for local cancer warriors and their families.

The railway was awash with pink throughout the day, creating a wonderful atmosphere of support, remembrance, hope, and community spirit.

To everyone who travelled with us, wore pink, donated, volunteered, or simply helped spread the word, thank you. Together, we demonstrated the powerful message that sits at the heart of Pinktober:

πŸ’— No One Fights Alone. πŸ’—

πŸ¦” A special resident of the Don Reserve

One of the unique things about the Don River Railway is that our branch line passes through the beautiful Don Reserve, home to a wide range of Tasmania's native wildlife.

This echidna was recently photographed beside the railway line, providing a wonderful reminder that our heritage railway shares its surroundings with some remarkable neighbours.

Whether you're travelling on one of our heritage trains or volunteering around the railway, you never quite know what wildlife you might see.

What's the most memorable wildlife sighting you've had at Don River Railway?

We're proud to be supporting Penguin in Pink through our Pinktober Charity Trains this Sunday.

Cancer has touched the lives of so many people in our community. Through this special event, every ticket purchased helps support the fantastic work of Penguin in Pink and the local cancer warriors and families they assist across North West Tasmania.

Thank you to Penguin in Pink, The Advocate, Freddie Moffat and David Bellamy for helping shine a light on this important cause.

If you'd like to enjoy a heritage train ride while supporting a great local charity, tickets are still available for our 2pm Pinktober Charity Train this Sunday.

πŸ’— No one fights alone.

Everyone knows someone, who will you be riding the train for?
