The National Wool Museum is a leading member of the City of Greater Geelong's arts and cultural community. Set in an historic 1872 bluestone woolstore, the Museum building formed part of a vast complex housing the Wool Broking firm of Dennys Lascelles Ltd in the times when Geelong was considered the

wool capital of the world. The Museum presents the timeless Australian story of wool, from sheep farming and wool production through to the processing of fleece into fabric. A woolly windmill, a taxidermy sheep, and three women spinning wool in the middle of a Geelong street.

This was Gala Day, Geelong’s beloved annual tradition that ran for over 20 years. In that time, it raised more than £75,500 for patriotic, charitable, and community causes.

In 1938, the city’s biggest organisations built floats, dressed up, and paraded through town, raising over £10,000 for the Hospital.

For one day a year, the whole city was transformed.

21 shearers. 75,000 sheep. 38 degree heat.

This is the shearing team at Puckapunyal Army Base in 1987, working for Jim Walker, a two-time Australian shearing team captain, pictured alongside the shed hands, yard staff, and cooks who kept the whole operation running.

On January 22, 1988, a mob of 75,172 Riverina-bred merino wethers, owned by the Mountjoy family from Geelong, were mustered for shearing through blinding dust and sweltering mid-summer heat.

Puckapunyal was not your average paddock. Decades of military use had left the land seriously degraded, and by the 1980s the Army was working hard to bring it back. The Mountjoy family's sheep were part of that recovery.

The old shed has since been bulldozed and burnt. The sheep are long gone. But here’s the crew that pulled it off.

Have you always wanted to learn how to knit, but you aren’t sure where to start?

To celebrate World Wide Knit in Public day, we are hosting a workshop for adults to learn how to knit. Run by Fluff and Nonsense’s very own Tess Vandekolk.

Come and learn the basics in a supportive and fun environment. You will learn how to cast on, to knit and purl stitches, and how to cast off, all while making a cute coaster to use under your favourite mugs.

All materials provided.

On display until 14 July, Interwoven: Fibre Art and Fashion celebrates artists and makers working at the intersection of fashion and fibre art, including with her striking dresses, .shin with her intricate tapestry.

Each work is connected by a common thread: the use of fibre and the artists’ relationship with , fostering creative growth through studio exchange, exhibitions, and community engagement.⁠

While certain materials are highly specific to a place or time, textiles are universal.

Tammy Gilson’s mum taught her the stories of Country.

Her mum’s grandma taught her the same on the beach, tracing the patterns of water and mountains into the sand.

Those designs are on this beautiful possum skin cloak. So are Aunty Marlene’s handprints.

The walert walert Tammy made for the National Wool Museum Collection is on display now as part of Interwoven: Fibre Art and Fashion, until 12th July.

Before the Westfield carpark, there was a warehouse, and a truck that outlasted both.

This 1930 Ford AA truck belonged to Blakiston & Co, hauling wool and goods across Geelong for over a decade.

By the 1980s it was nearly gone, until local restoration brought its transport heritage to life.

On the Move is an interactive transport exhibition touring from Museums of History NSW and created in collaboration with illustrator James Gulliver Hancock

It’s an exhibition that's equal parts fun, fascinating, and hands-on.

Construct a paper plane. Build a vehicle of the future and test it on our track. Discover how cities move, how fuel choices shape our environment, and meet the Australians behind some of the country's most remarkable journeys and inventions.

This is the place for those who love machines ⚙️

Discover how wool is transformed from raw, greasy fleece into finished fabric.

Get up close with carding, weaving, and machine knitting, and learn about the scouring, combing, and spinning process that built an industry.

Also inside is the multi-award winning Reminiscence Cottage. A sensory recreation of Australian home life from 1930 to 1950, designed for the whole family and built to support individuals living with dementia.

It’s one gallery with lots to discover.
