This is the kind of landscape that makes you stop and look twice.

Joy Engelman captures the vast, otherworldly beauty of the Arckaringa landscape, where the land seems to stretch endlessly towards the horizon. Soft lavender and dusty blue skies sit above a dramatic sweep of ochre, pink, cream and deep red earth, with the colours rolling and folding through the landscape like layers of fabric.

There’s a beautiful contrast between the gentle, almost pastel sky and the rich, fiery colours of the land below. And then there’s that incredible edge - where the pale, sculptural cliffs give way to the intensely coloured earth beyond.

It feels both ancient and completely alive.

Joy doesn’t just paint the landscape as you might see it, she captures the feeling of standing there, surrounded by enormous skies and geological formations that have been shaped over time.

And honestly? Those colours are doing some serious work. 💜🧡💗

A beautiful statement piece from Joy’s IN STILLNESS collection and one that deserves a wall where it can really be seen.

This one is quietly beautiful.

There’s something wonderfully atmospheric about the way Chris has reduced the landscape to soft layers of colour and texture. Dusty pinks, warm ochres, faded blues and smoky mauves drift across the land and sky, creating a scene that feels almost like a memory of the landscape rather than a literal representation of it.

The low horizon and sweeping, open sky give it a beautiful sense of space and stillness, while the rougher marks through the foreground bring you back to the earth.

It’s understated, but that’s exactly its charm. No big drama. No blazing sunset. Just the quiet beauty of country stretching out beneath an enormous sky.

There’s something very Australian about it — dry, expansive, subtle and completely captivating.

A little bit dreamy. And a whole lot of stillness, Chris has created a series of West of West Wyalong I, II and III for IN STILLNESS, on now.

This is West Lake Eyre in its softer, quieter mood.

There’s a beautiful sense of distance in this painting - delicate, bare trees sit across the foreground while the landscape stretches away towards a hazy blue horizon. The layers of dusty pink, warm ochre, soft green and cool blue give the whole piece an almost dreamlike quality.

It feels incredibly still, but there’s plenty happening when you look closely. Little marks of colour, scattered vegetation and fine branches bring the landscape to life, while the huge expanse of sky gives it that wonderful feeling of space and solitude.

And Ephemeral and Serene is such a fitting title. Ephemeral - because the colours and conditions of a place like Lake Eyre are constantly changing. Serene - because, in this moment, everything feels wonderfully quiet.

A beautiful reminder that the Australian landscape doesn't always have to be bold and fiery to make an impact. Sometimes the quiet ones are the ones that make you stop.

You know that feeling?

The sun is up, but the day hasn't really started yet. The air is warm, the landscape is quiet and everything feels a little softer.

That's what this painting feels like to me.

It’s Getting Dusty - West Lake Eyre

Quiet, dusty and beautifully atmospheric.

Soft lavender skies stretch over the rugged landscape of West Lake Eyre, with layers of rocky earth winding through the foreground. There’s a lovely sense of movement in the brushwork — almost as though you can feel the dry outback air drifting across the land.

The muted purples, dusty pinks and little flashes of pale gold give this landscape a softness that contrasts beautifully with the rugged terrain. It’s the outback without the usual fiery reds — calm, hazy and a little bit mysterious.

And then there’s that title… “It’s Getting Dusty.”
You can almost feel the dust settling as you look at it.

A beautiful example of Joy’s ability to find colour, atmosphere and quiet beauty in the most remote Australian landscapes.

Soft. Rugged. Dusty. Very Joy Engelman.

Midday shimmer on the lagoon

That light. 😍

There’s something gorgeous about the way Chris has captured the shimmer and atmosphere here - soft blues, warm earth tones and all those little flickers of colour and texture.

It feels like one of those moments that lasts about five minutes… but you wish it would last all day.

IN STILLNESS - Mt Willoughby, Arckaringa |

This one is all about the colour.

At first glance, it’s a quiet landscape. A huge open sky, distant ranges and the sweeping forms of Mt Willoughby. But then you notice the pinks, corals, ochres, purples and flashes of gold, and suddenly the whole landscape starts to glow.

Joy has taken a place that could easily be described as stark or barren and found the incredible beauty hiding in it. The layers of the land draw your eye across the painting, while that soft turquoise sky gives it space to breathe.

And the title really does fit. “In Stillness” feels like that moment when you stop, look out across an enormous landscape and everything else just goes quiet.

It’s beautiful, calm and completely Australian with just enough colour to make it impossible to walk past.

This work is part of IN STILLNESS, Joy Engelman and Chris Anderson’s exhibition at The Peisley Street Gallery, open today and running through until October 17.
