How does an artwork change when the light shifts, when you move closer, or when you move through the space? In Fields of Perception, Greet Billet, Marien Schouten and Stan Van Steendam each explore, in their own way, the interplay between light, space, matter and our gaze.
Greet Billet works with reflective and transparent materials. Her works capture light and their surroundings, causing colours and reflections to change with the time of day and the visitor’s position.
Marien Schouten moves between painting, sculpture and architecture. In Green Room / Snake, his green ceramic room at Museum De Pont, colour becomes a space that you can enter. His other works likewise invite us to experience our relationship to space anew through form and material.
Stan Van Steendam gives painting a tangible presence. Layer by layer, he builds up surfaces in which pigment and plaster acquire their own texture. Up close, you discover the materiality; from a distance, the image changes.
Together, the three artists show that looking is never static. What we see is constantly re-created in the encounter between the artwork, the light, the space and ourselves.
