Veronik Willems creates bittersweet works about closeness, intimacy and humanity with powerful, painterly gestures. She works on canvas, on paper and in installations, where rudimentary narrative and cinematic elements merge with a tendency towards the abstract and monumental. After studying at Sint-Lucas Antwerp, Willems initially exhibited paintings, only to then push painting into the background for years. In recent years, she has returned to focusing entirely on her autonomous practice. In large, immersive works, she explores the boundaries of classical painting, with a distinctly physical treatment of paint and a subtle tension between vulnerability and strength.
