𝙎𝙠𝙖𝙬𝙚𝙣𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞 is a visual artist. Her machinimas and machinimagraphs (movies and still images made in virtual environments), textiles and sculpture have been presented internationally and collected by the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montreal and the Thoma Foundation, among others.

Recipient of a 2022 Hewlett 50 Arts Commissions Grant and an Honorary Doctorate from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, she is also a founding board member of daphne, Montreal’s first Indigenous artist-run center. She co-directs Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace (AbTeC), a research-creation network at Concordia University. Originally from Kahnawà:ke, Skawennati resides in Montreal.

𝗞𝗶𝘁𝗲 (Oglála Lakȟóta) is an artist, composer, and scholar whose work merges Lakȟóta knowledge systems with performance, sound, sculpture, and computational media. She holds a PhD from Concordia University, Montréal. 𝗞𝗶𝘁𝗲 is Director of the Wíhaŋble S’a Center for Indigenous AI, a National Endowment for the Humanities–designated Humanities Research Center at Bard College, where she is Distinguished Artist in Residence and Assistant Professor of American & Indigenous Studies. She is also Co-PI and Co-Director of the international Abundant Intelligences Research Program. Major projects include Cosmologyscape (Creative Time, 2022–24), Dreaming with AI (Institute of American Indian Arts Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, 2025), List Projects 31: Kite (MIT List Visual Arts Center, 2025), and Wičháȟpi Owihaŋke Waníča Kiŋ (Infinite Collapsing Star) (Bockley Gallery, 2025). Her work has been featured internationally at the Guatemala Biennial, Whitney Biennial, São Paulo Biennial, and the Shanghai Biennale. 𝗞𝗶𝘁𝗲 is an enrolled citizen of the Oglala Sioux Tribe and lives in Catskill, NY.

⟡ 𝗠𝗼𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗸⟡

âpihtawikosisâniskwêw (Métis/mixed-settler) multidisciplinary artist 𝗠𝗼𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗸 is a 2Spirit singing thunderbird. Moe was born and raised in Treaty 7, and they are a proud member of the Métis Nation of Alberta. Currently she resides as a guest in Tio’tiá:ke/Mooniyang/Montréal (Quebec) where she works as an artist and educator. A dedicated nêhiyawêwin (Plains Cree language) and Michif language learner, 𝗠𝗼𝗲 collaborates intimately with Elders and knowledge keepers to advance language resurgence through song-based practices. She works across disciplines of vocal improvisation, sound design, land-based oskapêw facilitation (ceremonial Elder apprenticeship), and performance creation, to create work that centres embodied knowledge, 2Spirit Indigenous resurgence, and creative kinship.

Artiste multidisciplinaire aux deux esprits âpihtawikosisâniskwêw (d’ascendance métisse et coloniale), 𝗠𝗼𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗸 est un·e oiseau-tonnerre chantant. Originaire du territoire du Traité no 7, l’artiste est membre de la Nation métisse de l’Alberta et réside actuellement à Tio'tiá:ke/Mooniyang/Montréal, au Québec. En plein apprentissage du nêhiyawêwin (cri des plaines) et du michif, l’artiste et pédagogue collabore étroitement avec les Aîné·es et les gardiens et gardiennes du savoir pour promouvoir la revitalisation linguistique par le chant. Touche-à-tout, 𝗠𝗼𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗸 se plait à diversifier sa pratique – improvisation vocale, conception sonore, accompagnement cérémoniel ancré dans le territoire (oskapêw) et création scénique – pour produire des œuvres qui font la part belle aux connaissances incarnées, à la résurgence autochtone bispirituelle et aux affinités créatives.

Today, we are celebrating the curator of The Earth We Carry: Hanss Lujan Torres. Join us tomorrow (October 15) at 1pm for a curatorial tour at FOFA Gallery with Hanss.

Hanss Lujan Torres is a writer, curator, and researcher of Quechua and Spanish descent (Mestizo) from Cusco, Peru, currently based in Tiohtià:ke (Montreal). His work engages with object relationalities, alternative temporalities, and future imaginaries. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a Minor in Art History and Visual Culture from the University of British Columbia Okanagan, and a Master of Arts in Art History from Concordia University. His writing and curatorial practice explore archival encounters, q***r affects, and the interrelations between technology and the environment. Hanss has written for several exhibition catalogues and arts publications and has participated in writing and research residencies, including Esse Magazine, Artexte, and Celine Bureau.

Hanss has worked with several arts organizations, including serving as President of the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art, Curatorial Assistant at the Kelowna Art Gallery, and Curatorial Intern at the Leonard and Bina Ellen Art Gallery. He currently serves as the Research Coordinator for the Indigenous Futures Research Centre (IFRC) at Concordia University

The Earth We Carry – Curatorial Tour with Hanss Lujan Torres

Join us Thursday, October 15 at 1pm for a curatorial tour of one of our current exhibitions, The Earth We Carry. Throughout the guided tour, the curator, Hanss Lujan Torres will introduce the key themes, the works on view, and the ideas that bring the exhibition together, followed by a Q&A. This exhibition brings together six Indigenous artists whose practices move across land, body, and technology, treating these not as separate spheres but as interconnected domains. The exhibition is up until November 20, 2026.

The curatorial tour will be presented in English and is open to the public.

For those attending the University Art Association of Canada (UAAC/AAUC) conference, we’re pleased to share that Hanss will be chairing the panel “The Earth We Carry: Indigenous Technics Across Land, Body, and Digital Space” at Concordia University on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, from 3:30–5:00 PM.

The panel will feature artist Amanda Lickers, whose work is included in this exhibition, alongside Stacey Koosel and Laura Grier.

🧡 Orange Shirt Dyeing Workshop

Join us on Tuesday, September 29 for a hands-on dyeing workshop as we prepare for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The orange shirt is a symbol of the experiences of Indigenous children, families, and communities affected by the residential school system, and a reminder that Every Child Matters. Ahead of Orange Shirt Day (September 30), the FOFA Gallery, in collaboration with the Indigenous Futures Research Centre (IFRC) and the Textiles & Materialities Research Cluster invite the Concordia community to come together to learn, reflect, and create.

Led by artist Abby Maxwell, this workshop will introduce participants to the process of natural fabric dyeing using cosmos plants. Participants will also engage in a discussion about the history and significance of Orange Shirt Day and the Day for Truth and Reconciliation

This event is by donation and open to the Concordia community. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

All dyeing materials and shirts will be provided (limited sizes and quantities available).

All proceeds will go directly to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society (IRSSS).

Space is limited and registration is required!

This exhibition brings together Friesen’s recent works in video, photography, and wood carving. The exhibition works through a series of graftings that amplify displaced artistic, architectural, and political histories of Soviet Kazakhstan. Grounded in a developing notion of the dispersed monumental, the works trace forms of dislocated historical memory through unofficial archives, land, architecture, and sound. From Stalin-era repressions to post-war Soviet modernism, Friesen approaches histories of exile, incarceration, and dislocation in the former Karlag gulag region of Karaganda, and in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s former capital.

Cette exposition rassemble les œuvres récentes de Friesen en vidéo, en photographie et en sculpture sur bois.
