A lovely old (1920’s/40’s) Asafo flag that shows great age with its damask cloth ground and use of felt for the leopard and Oware board. The leopard is a symbol of strength and power in Fante culture, while the abstract board game of Oware is a symbol of wisdom. So this flag is most likely a display of the Asafo companies wisdom and strength.

*We have recently added five wonderful old Asafo flags to www.AtelierNomade.ca (in the art and textile art sections)

Winter is wonderful. And with the right rugs it can be even moreso. Deep pile Moroccan rugs cushion, and insulate like no other rugs around. Like walking on clouds many people say. But, don’t forget the ability many good vintage rugs have to completely transform rooms in wonderful, cozy, living environments! Most of the rugs pictured were collected through Atelier Nomade but we also have a number of truly special pieces waiting to help transform your homes! Some of which are over 80 years old, but are getting better with time!

Every now and then we come across quite rare flags that aren’t antiques. Like this Asafo flag from the Kormantse workshop that depicts the somewhat common proverb ‘We control the c**k and the clock bird!’ About how the Asafo company it even controls time (since the rooster signals the start of the day). This flag in particular is a post independence (1957) flag but can also be quite clearly dated. Between 1964 and 66 Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s president, changed the Ghanaian flag from a yellow to a white middle band to reflect more socialist leaning. But by 1967 it had changed back to the yellow band. Very few Asafo flags exist from that time, making this one all the more special as it reflects changes in Ghana’s political history.

When we bring objects into our homes, whether it be rugs, art, cutlery or furniture, we invite a chance to tell a story. When we choose items with character, individuality and age we allow for those items to communicate a bit of their history that has often been gathered over time. And that time worn patina can imbue our homes with softness, individuality and history that can rarely be found in new, commercially made items. If you choose to call it wabi sabi, shibui or otherwise, the idea is the same and genuine older items can warm sometimes cold contemporary interiors and invite conversation and story if we allow it to. That is one of the main goals of the Atelier; to find unique and interesting items from around the world, whether it be rugs, flags, art, furniture etc. to help people create unique and character built interiors!

Sometimes the perfect rug for a room isn’t the one you had in mind. For this basement living area with little light a couple of rugs were tried out but this somewhat wild rug from Eastern Morocco, with zips of neon brought some life and energy to a room with only a modest amount of natural light. In my mind I had pictured it in a below ground level room like Luke Skywalker’s home on Tattooine!

Our all cotton bath rugs were made as a multi-use rug with build in structure to handle wet, slippery bathrooms, entranceways etc. yet still have style and comfort. Many people throw small wool rugs in wet areas without realising that wool can easily rot and disintegrate due to excessive moisture. Hence we designed an all cotton rug made the same way as the small wool pile rugs from Morocco, that will last for years getting wet repeatedly!
