Join us today for a conversation with artist Michelle Leone Huisman and curator Abigaile Boggs about V**es & Butts, an exhibition that considers culture, social meaning, process, and beauty through a contemporary response to Irving Penn’s Ci******es series.

Pictured here is a series of Michelle’s works focusing on cigarette butts, photographed with care and transformed through historic photographic processes. The images reflect on consumption, addiction, waste, memory, environmental harm, and the unexpected beauty found in discarded materials.

This intimate classical vocal recital brings Abby’s remarkable voice into the gallery for a special evening of music with warmth, beauty, and song. This is also closing day of our current exhibition by .lleleone.

Abby Boggs Bio

Coloratura soprano Abby Boggs is enjoying a vibrant 2025-2026 season, with both soloist appearances and ensemble performances. She regularly performs with the Vancouver Chamber Choir as a core ensemble member.

Recent soloist highlights include being the soprano soloist with Ballet Victoria’s Carmina Burana in March 2025, the roles L’Hébé, L’Amour, and Zima with Denman Island Baroque in a concert performance Rameau’s Les Indes galantes, and as the soprano soloist in Bach’s Weihnachtsoratorium. She has also appeared as soprano soloist for Schubert’s Mass in G Major, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass and Mozart’s Vesperae solennes de confessore with the Victoria Choral Society and Linden Singers.

She holds a Master of Music in Voice Performance from the University of Victoria, a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Wheaton Conservatory, and she studied at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School. Abby is also a current board member for Salt Spring Baroque. She lives in North Vancouver with her husband and son.

Gallery 881 is proud to introduce our new Chief Curator: Chester! 🐾

Chester brings a fresh eye, strong instincts, and a deep commitment to naps, snacks, and (obviously!) contemporary lens-based art.

He is still settling into his new role, but in the future, visitors to the gallery may have the chance to meet him during select gallery hours.

Chester is a low-shedding, hypoallergenic dog, though we’ll keep introductions gentle and optional for anyone visiting the space.

Please join us in welcoming Chester to the Gallery 881 team. You can also call him Mister Chesterfield, Chet, or Che for short. Although at 12 weeks old, he mostly just responds to one kind of dog food.

We expect great things from his curatorial vision and look forward to seeing how he matures in this new and exciting role! 🐶

Thank you to everyone who came out for an incredible opening reception for V**es & Butts. Many thanks to Michelle Leone Huisman (.lleleone) and curator Abigaile Boggs () for their tremendous and thoughtful work in bringing this beautiful exhibition to fruition. The process and subject matter are both challenging, and we couldn’t be happier the exhibition.

Gallery 881 is open tomorrow from 12–5pm. We hope you’ll come by to see the exhibition!
