This Friday, May 29, we’re celebrating the launch of our newest publication “Modern Iran and the Avant-Gardes, 1948–1978,” with a sold-out panel discussion!

Focusing on the intersections of architecture, art and poetry, the panel brings together guest curator Pantea Haghighi, artist and architect Hossein Amanat, and scholar Jeff Derksen to examine the evolving relationship between modernity and tradition in Iranian art.

The catalogue accompanies our forthcoming exhibition of the same name, opening on December 11, 2026. The exhibition is the first in Canada to explore how the complex cultural tensions of the period sparked new forms of artistic innovation.

Pick up your copy of the book today from the Gallery Store!

This program is an initiative of the Gallery’s Centre for Global Asias and is presented as part of our Asian Heritage Month programming.

Longer days, later sunsets and more time for art! ☀️

Made from handmade fishing nets gathered from river communities across Latin America, Caycedo’s suspended sculpture incorporates water from the Pacific Ocean, the Fraser River (stó:lō in Halkomelem) and the Capilano River, honouring the lands, waters and Indigenous communities connected to these places.

🕙 Summer Hours
Monday–Sunday | 10 AM–5 PM
Thursdays | Open until 8 PM

Thank you to the indelible Jane Fonda for stopping by to experience “Future Geographies: Art in the Century of Climate Change.”

In Vancouver for tonight’s legacy, A Celebration of David at 90, presented by the David Suzuki Foundation, Fonda continues to champion the values that have defined her decades-long commitment to environmental advocacy and social justice.

Fonda was joined at the Gallery by Naomi Klein—bestselling author, climate justice advocate and UBC Professor—along with Avi Lewis, Leader of Canada’s NDP.

The tour was led by Eva Respini and Sirish Rao, the Gallery’s Interim Co-CEOs, highlighting the Gallery’s role in bringing together artists, thinkers, changemakers and communities to engage with the ideas and conversations shaping our world today.

🎟️ Show your ticket for David Suzuki’s 90th birthday benefit concert at the Gallery on May 29 and 30 to receive free admission.

Happy International Drawing Day! ✏️ This is your reminder to bring your sketchbook and pencils on your next visit to the Gallery.

Slow down, look closely and sketch what moves you. Inspiration is waiting around every corner.

Visitors can also get creative in the interactive drawing space inside “That Green Ideal: Emily Carr and the Idea of Nature.”

Plus, we’re open for the long weekend, the perfect time to spend a day with art.

🎨 Plan your visit at www.vanartgallery.bc.ca.

We love these sketches from a recent visit by Valentin Clauzon, inspired by a watercolour of a seated girl by Emily Carr and a photograph from Stephen Shore’s landmark series “Uncommon Places.”
