🎬 Now open at Art Basel Paris: our Booth C38, with On Kawara and Lewis Baltz at its centre
In the late 1960s, On Kawara and Lewis Baltz developed, almost simultaneously, radical approaches that would transform Conceptual Art and photography respectively, and with them our understanding of time and place. At our stand, their early works take centre stage, joined by further artists from the gallery.
🕰️ On Kawara (1933 to 2014) began his Today series on 4 January 1966. Each Date Painting records only the day it was made, in white lettering on a plain ground, and comes with a box lined with a local newspaper clipping from that very day. He made nearly 3,000 of them in more than 100 cities.
🏘️ Lewis Baltz (1945 to 2014) was a key voice of the New Topographics movement. His early series The Tract Houses and The Prototype Works turned suburban architecture into a radically reduced, almost minimalist language, and helped conceptual photography find its place in contemporary art. Our reel also features views of his 1971 exhibition at Leo Castelli Gallery, New York.
