🪟 “I’m interested in what is often overlooked.”

In the interview, artist Kate Newby speaks about her site-specific installation „Good Sound / I’m asking“, developed for Museum Folkwang.

Working with glass and concrete, the materials of modernist architecture, Newby creates subtle interventions that respond directly to the museum’s architecture, connecting the 1960 building with its 2010 extension. Her works trace lines, capture fingerprints, and carry small marks of making that shift with light, movement, and time. 🪨 🖐️
Rather than standing apart from the building, her installation becomes part of it: slipping into corners, surfaces, and transitions between inside and outside. In doing so, Newby invites us to slow down and notice what is usually left unseen: traces, textures, and quiet gestures embedded in space.

Im Interview spricht die Künstlerin Kate Newby über ihre ortsspezifische Installation „Good Sound / I’m asking“, die sie für das Museum Folkwang entwickelt hat.

Mit Glas und Beton, den Materialien der modernen Architektur, schafft Newby subtile Eingriffe, die direkt auf die Architektur des Museums reagieren und den Bau von 1960 mit dem Erweiterungsbau von 2010 verbinden. Ihre Arbeiten ziehen Linien, bewahren Fingerabdrücke und tragen kleine Spuren des Herstellungsprozesses, die sich mit Licht, Bewegung und Zeit verändern. 🪨 🖐️
Anstatt sich vom Gebäude abzugrenzen, wird ihre Installation Teil davon: Sie verschwindet in Ecken, auf Oberflächen und in Übergängen zwischen Innen- und Außenraum. So lädt Newby dazu ein, langsamer zu schauen und das wahrzunehmen, was oft unsichtbar bleibt – Spuren, Texturen und leise Gesten im Raum.

🦁🐍 A frozen struggle full of movement.

Strength meets cunning, movement meets tension: in ‘The Lion and the Snake’, Eugène Delacroix captures the dramatic moment of an existential struggle. With dynamic lines and a striking observation of the animal world, the artist depicts nature as a place of untamed energy.

To create such depictions, Delacroix studied live animals at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. The sketches he produced there enabled him to capture even fleeting movements and physical tension with extraordinary precision.

The artist is regarded as one of the most significant figures of Romanticism and, at the same time, a pioneer of modernism, as his paintings broke with the strict order of Classicism: Instead of calm and control, the focus is on movement, emotion and dynamism.

🦁🐍 Ein eingefrorener Kampf voller Bewegung.

Kraft trifft auf List, Bewegung auf Spannung: In „Löwe und Schlange“ fängt Eugène Delacroix den dramatischen Augenblick eines existenziellen Kampfes ein. Mit dynamischen Linien und einer eindrucksvollen Beobachtung der Tierwelt zeigt der Künstler die Natur als Ort ungebändigter Energie.

Für solche Darstellungen studierte Delacroix lebende Tiere im Pariser Jardin des Plantes. Die dort entstandenen Skizzen ermöglichten ihm, selbst flüchtige Bewegungen und körperliche Spannung mit außergewöhnlicher Präzision festzuhalten.

Der Künstler gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter der Romantik und zugleich als Wegbereiter der Moderne, da seine Gemälde mit der strengen Ordnung des Klassizismus brachen: Statt Ruhe und Kontrolle stehen Bewegung, Emotion und Dynamik im Mittelpunkt.

🌿 Art in the Garden returns!

Starting June 13, Bonnekamphöhe will once again become a place of discovery, experimentation, and creativity every Saturday from 2:30 to 4:30 PM – for children and families alike.

For the third year in a row, the Bonnekamp Foundation and Museum Folkwang are joining forces to bring nature and art together. The programme is made possible through the sale of the Climate Ticket, supporting a strong commitment to sustainable cultural engagement. ♻️

The natural garden itself becomes the starting point: among vegetable beds, ponds, a chicken coop, and wild shrubs, art emerges right in the heart of nature. One day participants might work with plant-based colours, another day leaves and vegetables become tools for printing and experimentation.
While children explore, observe, and create, parents are welcome to join in or relax with coffee and cake at Café Bunte Beete ☕🍰
Just drop by – no registration required, free of charge, and right in the middle of summer in the city.

🌿 Kunst im Garten kehrt zurück!

Ab dem 13. Juni wird die Bonnekamphöhe wieder jeden Samstag von 14:30 bis 16:30 Uhr zu einem Ort voller Entdeckungen, Experimente und kreativer Momente – für Familien und Kinder.

Bereits im dritten Jahr laden die Bonnekamp Stiftung und das Museum Folkwang gemeinsam dazu ein, Natur und Kunst miteinander zu verbinden. Möglich wird das Angebot durch den Verkauf des Klimatickets, das ein starkes Zeichen für nachhaltige Kulturarbeit setzt. ♻️

Der Naturgarten selbst wird dabei zum Ausgangspunkt: zwischen Beeten, Tümpel, Hühnerstall und wilden Sträuchern entsteht Kunst direkt im Grünen. Mal wird mit Pflanzenfarben gearbeitet, mal verwandeln sich Gemüse und Blätter in Drucke.
Während die Kinder forschen und gestalten, können Eltern selbst kreativ mitmachen oder im Café Bunte Beete bei Kaffee und Kuchen verweilen ☕🍰
Einfach vorbeikommen – ohne Anmeldung, kostenfrei und mitten im Sommer draußen in der Stadt.

The internationally acclaimed artist transforms materials such as glass and concrete into subtle traces of human presence. Through fingerprints, marks, and small interventions, she draws our attention to details that often go unnoticed in everyday life. 🖐️

An evening shaped by voice, movement, and presence. 🎤

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Meredith Monk to Museum Folkwang for a rare trio concert together with Katie Geissinger and Allison Sniffin. Spanning works from six decades, the performance invited audiences into Monk’s unique artistic universe. 🌏

Through a rich interplay of voice, movement, and gesture, the artists revealed the breadth of Monk’s distinctive practice.Sounds shifted between melody, rhythm, breath, and silence, opening up ever new forms of expression. 🎶🎭

As a special surprise, Ellen Fisher joined the trio for a brief danced intermezzo, adding an unexpected and joyful moment to the eveningThank you to everyone who joined us for this special evening. 🌙

Ein Abend geprägt von Stimme, Bewegung und Präsenz. 🎤

Vergangene Woche hatten wir das Vergnügen, Meredith Monk gemeinsam mit Katie Geissinger und Allison Sniffin für ein seltenes Triokonzert im Museum Folkwang zu begrüßen. Mit Werken aus sechs Jahrzehnten lud die Aufführung das Publikum in Monks einzigartiges künstlerisches Universum ein. 🌏

Durch das vielschichtige Zusammenspiel von Stimme, Bewegung und Geste offenbarten die Künstlerinnen die Bandbreite von Monks unverwechselbarer Praxis. Klänge wechselten zwischen Melodie, Rhythmus, Atem und Stille und eröffneten immer neue Ausdrucksformen. 🎶🎭

Als besondere Überraschung stieß Ellen Fisher für ein kurzes tänzerisches Intermezzo zum Trio hinzu und bescherte dem Abend einen unerwarteten und freudvollen Moment.

Vielen Dank an alle, die diesen besonderen Abend mit uns verbracht haben. 🌙

In the 19th century, Courbet’s subjects represented a radical break with the rules of the art world of his time. And that is exactly what still makes them so fascinating today! 🎨 🖌️

Instead of portraying kings and heroes, he showed real life: landscapes, hunting scenes, and members of the bourgeoisie — all on a monumental scale. 👁️ 🦌 🎯 Courbet gave the everyday a stage, deliberately challenging established artistic conventions and social hierarchies.

His works were therefore not only admired, but also fiercely criticized. Courbet himself was seen by many as a rebel. 🔥

Starting July 16, you can experience these works in all their scale and impact here at Museum Folkwang.

Courbets Motive waren zu seiner Zeit im 19. Jhd. ein radikaler Bruch mit den Regeln der Kunstwelt. Genau das macht sie bis heute so faszinierend! 🎨 🖌️

Statt Könige und Held:innen zeigte er das echte Leben: Landschaften, Jagdszenen und Menschen aus dem Bürgertum und zwar in monumentaler Größe. 👁️ 🦌 🎯 Courbet gab dem Alltäglichen eine Bühne und stellte damit etablierte Kunstregeln und gesellschaftliche Hierarchien bewusst infrage.

Seine Werke wurden deshalb nicht nur bewundert, sondern auch heftig kritisiert. Courbet selbst galt vielen als Rebell. 🔥

Ab dem 16. Juli könnt ihr diese Werke bei uns im Museum Folkwang in ihrer ganzen Größe und Wirkung selbst erleben.
