Ice Age Europe

Ice Age Europe The network of archaeological sites and museums across Europe with outstanding Ice Age heritage

The Ice Age Europe network tells the story of Ice Age people in Europe and our Pleistocene cultural heritage in space and time. In order to learn about this heritage, we must first enhance its conservation and protection. The network’s aims are to raise awareness on the conservation of Ice Age heritage and to develop valorization programs, to exchange best practices for site management and museum

display and to encourage collaboration of all kinds, e.g. in the fields of science, management, pedagogy, tourism and governance. As a new umbrella brand, the network provides an opportunity to reach both well-established and new target groups across Europe. This will enhance the attractiveness of the network to external collaboration partners and increase success in applying for funding programs as well as a joint World Heritage Site. LEAD PARTNER

New article – Ice Age Europe Magazine

In this new contribution, Barbara Spreer (Museum of Prehistory and Ice Age Art) examines the role of music in the Upper Palaeolithic through the evidence from the Swabian Jura.

The discovery of bone and ivory flutes dated to ~40,000 years ago provides key insights into the emergence of symbolic behaviour, cognitive complexity, and social interaction in early Homo sapiens.

Ice Age Magazine - New Article: Fumane Cave on the Road

From Croatia to South Korea, the story of Grotta di Fumane travelled across continents through workshops, surveys, demonstrations, and creative activities.

As part of an international PhD mobility project, archaeologists and educators shared the world of the Ice Age with new audiences—testing museum experiences, engaging visitors with stone-knapping, and using drawing to overcome language barriers.

A journey where public archaeology becomes dialogue, exchange, and inspiration—proving that prehistory can truly connect people across cultures.
