Refreshing – Adrian’s Colors
°
Isn’t it refreshing?
The bold raspberry tone of Adrian’s shirt and the fresh shades of green in his silk bandana?
°
The cap in a light sand shade serves as a nice neutral accent, evoking images of sandy beaches.
°
These color combinations also reminded me of ice cream and instantly lifted my spirits: raspberry ice cream thanks to the shirt’s color, and chocolate ice cream thanks to the wonderful tone of Adrian’s skin.
°
I mentioned this, and we both laughed. Ice cream would have been a more than welcome treat for both of us on that scorching summer day—about a year ago—when we were sitting across from each other at the Pitti Uomo trade fair in Florence, chatting while we worked.
°

It was in Florence almost exactly a year ago. I urgently needed to finish some work on my laptop and was feeling a bit stressed.
- It was hot, a trade fair was taking place, and I was sitting in a small room surrounded by very loud people—plus, I’d forgotten my headphones, which I would have used to block out the noise.
°
Thank goodness Adrian was sitting opposite me; his calm and cheerful demeanor helped put me at ease.
We couldn’t talk much at first because it was so noisy around us and I had to get my work done.
°
However, while I worked, we occasionally exchanged questions and answers. That’s how I learned that Adrian is a photographer and had traveled from Barbados.
°
When I heard that—and mentioned that I was currently practicing portrait photography— we decided on the spur of the moment to take a photo of him sitting across from me.
°
I’m posting a black-and-white photo first to draw more attention to his facial features and presence; I’ll share a color photo of Adrian later on.
°
Thank you very much, Adrian , for your support. Your presence alone was a huge help to me in that situation.
I hope you’re doing well, and I also want to sincerely thank you for allowing me to photograph you and publish the images.
°

I am constantly fascinated by the doors found on so many different buildings in Italy.
Here, Roberto is standing in front of one of those heavy doors—often made of oak.
°
Ironically, I chose the title „Roberto ad portas“—an expression that served as an alarm call in ancient Rome and was used by Cicero in his speeches.
Originally, this exclamation referred to the looming danger when Hannibal marched his army against Rome in 211 BC.
°

The Female Satyr

A female satyr—yes, *female*!—is nursing her baby satyr, who lies atop a goat. The mother, who also possesses goat legs, stands behind the goat.
At first glance, I didn’t notice her goat legs at all; since she is standing behind the goat, I initially mistook her for a human figure.
°
Female satyrs were long considered a modern invention, as in Greek mythology, satyrs were exclusively male.
°
However, on a large frieze depicting the Mysteries, a satyrine nursing a goat was found in the *Villa dei Misteri* (Villa of the Mysteries) in Pompeii, which was discovered in 1909.
°
When Giulio Romano painted these frescoes between 1526 and 1528, he knew nothing of the frescoes in Pompeii, for they were still buried beneath the earth.
The central theme of this fresco is the bathing of Venus (not visible in this image) and Mars (visible on the left).
°
With these two photographs, I conclude my two trilogies dedicated to the Palazzo Te in Mantua—a place I will undoubtedly visit again and again.
There is simply so much left to discover there, or to examine in greater detail.
°

What a feast! - The Chamber of Cupid and Psyche – Palazzo del Te, Mantua

Cupid and Psyche have finally found each other, and this happiness is being celebrated with great exuberance.
°
We see scenes of preparation for an opulent feast.
Cupid and Psyche, along with their daughter Voluptas, have already made themselves comfortable on a chaise longue. They are not visible in this scene.
°
Construction of this palace-like complex began in 1524 under Federico II Gonzaga; it was intended to demonstrate Federico II’s power, wealth, and refined taste to high-ranking visitors.
Giulio Romano—a pupil of Raphael—was responsible for both the design and the supervision of the construction.
°

A Celebration of Love – The Chamber of Amor and Psyche – Palazzo del Te, Mantua

Despite enduring every trial, Cupid and Psyche have found their way to one another. This union is celebrated with a grand feast. Their daughter, Voluptas (Pleasure), is also in attendance.
°
The story is rooted in the tale of the mortal Psyche, who is so exquisitely beautiful that people begin to worship her instead of Venus. Consequently, the jealous Venus commands her son, Cupid, to strike Psyche with an arrow so that she might fall in love with the ugliest creature in the world. However, events unfold quite differently, and the narrative remains suspenseful right up to its happy ending.
°
Shown here is merely a small section of this fresco—a work whose uninhibited imagery reminded me of ancient frescoes (such as those found in Pompeii).
For this reason, I am presenting only the somewhat more innocuous scenes, so as not to trigger the censorship protocols of the „digital inquisition.“ ;-)
°
This opulent chamber was reserved exclusively for the most distinguished guests; it was also intended to serve as a sanctuary for Federico Gonzaga—a place for „honorable“ leisure and respite from the arduous duties of governance.
°
Intriguingly, it was his love for—and relationship with—his mistress, Isabella Boschetti (b. c. 1502; d. after 1542)—known as *la bella Boschetta* („the beautiful Boschetta“)—that inspired Federico to commission the construction of the palace. Through their illegitimate daughter, Emilia Cauzzi Gonzaga (b. 1524; d. 1573), they left behind a lineage that continues to flourish through the female line to this very day.
— The true bonds of love, it seems, are imperishable—capable of enduring every adversity and vicissitude of history.

The scenario from another perspective. Through the frescoing of the walls, the actual space is transformed—corners are rounded, the room is distorted—thereby drawing the disoriented viewer even deeper into the unfolding events.

Construction of this palace-like complex began in 1524 under Federico II Gonzaga; it was intended to demonstrate Federico II’s power, wealth, and refined taste to high-ranking visitors.
Giulio Romano—a pupil of Raphael—was responsible for both the design and the supervision of the construction.

The Illusion

In the “Sala dei Giganti” (Hall of the Giants) at the Palazzo in Mantua, Giulio Romano conjures up a dome through his Mannerist fresco—the perfect illusion.
°
The viewer’s gaze is drawn ever higher up into the vault of the dome. Curious spectators have gathered at dizzying heights within the central dome to watch the battle between the gods and the giants from a safe distance.
°
