Is it a kiosk or a circus? A circus or a kiosk?

As part of EXPOSED, the .photo.festival, curated by , Paolo Ventura transformed a historic newsstand next to the arcades of Piazza San Carlo into a place suspended between reality and imagination.

Created in conjunction with his exhibition Acrobati 2020–2025, the project, titled Edicola Acrobatica, reimagines the traditional newsstand as a theatrical stage, filled with newspapers, magazines, artists’ books, vintage photographs and found ephemera.

We were particularly delighted to discover that the catalogue published on the occasion of our exhibition »The Lost Magpie and Other Affairs« was included among the carefully selected publications presented at the kiosk, creating a small but meaningful connection between Ventura’s projects in Turin and Berlin.

Developed in collaboration with and the City of Turin, the installation reflects many of the themes that have shaped .ventura ’s work for decades. Memory and fiction, past and present, everyday life and performance merge into a poetic environment that feels both familiar and dreamlike.

Like much of Ventura’s work, Edicola Acrobatica blurs the boundaries between art and life. What appears at first glance to be an ordinary kiosk slowly reveals itself as a carefully constructed world populated by echoes of travelling circuses, forgotten stories and imagined histories.

For a brief moment, one of Turin’s most iconic public spaces became a stage set, inviting passersby to pause, look closer and step into Ventura’s universe.

Following the opening of his first solo exhibition in Germany, »The Lost Magpie and Other Affairs« in our gallery, .ventura returns to Berlin with a new project presented as part of the exhibition »Rooms / Stages«

The internationally acclaimed Italian artist, whose work moves seamlessly between photography, painting, collage, drawing, and scenography, has developed two new series for the exhibition, both conceived in direct dialogue with Berlin.

One of them, »Homage to H.N.«, is dedicated to Helmut Newton and builds upon »The Vanishing Man«, a narrative that has accompanied Ventura’s work for many years.

At the heart of this series lies a simple yet magical illusion. By painting part of a wall directly in front of his backdrop, the protagonist appears to walk into the city and gradually disappear. What begins as a visual trick becomes a poetic reflection on memory, absence, and the passage of time.

For Berlin, Ventura reimagines this celebrated work through the lens of Helmut Newton’s biography. The backdrop depicts the building that today houses the Newton Foundation at Bahnhof Zoo, the station from which Helmut Newton departed Berlin when he fled Germany in 1938. The work thus establishes a subtle connection between Ventura’s imagined narrative and a pivotal moment in Newton’s life.

Installed within the Newton Foundation itself, the backdrop extends beyond the photographic image and becomes a physical stage. Visitors are invited to step into the scene and become part of the story, blurring the boundaries between viewer and protagonist, reality and fiction.

For Paolo Ventura, every image is a story. In Berlin, the city becomes both stage and protagonist, where memory and imagination continue the narrative.

Few photographers have shaped the visual language of music culture as profoundly as Anton Corbijn.

Born in 1955 in Strijen in the Netherlands, first picked up a camera at the age of seventeen to photograph the local band Solution in Groningen. Driven by his fascination for post punk music, he moved to London in 1979, where he worked for five years as chief photographer for the legendary magazine New Musical Express.

During this period, Corbijn began long standing collaborations with artists including Depeche Mode and U2, relationships that would come to define entire visual eras within contemporary music history.

Alongside his photographic practice, Corbijn directed more than 80 music videos, designed stage sets and album covers and later became internationally renowned as a filmmaker through movies such as Control, The American, A Most Wanted Man and Life. In recent years his focus has shifted towards cinema, with his new film Switzerland starring Helen Mirren.

Within Corbijn’s oeuvre, LICHT occupies a very special position. The series reveals his extraordinary ability to transform portraiture into atmosphere, emotion and movement through nothing more than light itself.

We are therefore especially pleased to present these works for the first time in Italy at THE PHAIR in Turin.

With LICHT, Anton Corbijn developed a visual language that moves far beyond conventional music photography.

The rhythmic movements of the flashlight create blurred contours, overlaps and dramatic light effects that give the photographs a vibrating, almost cinematic quality. The portrayed musicians seem not only to be brought into the light, but also into motion itself.

Rather than pursuing perfection, Corbijn deliberately embraces fractures, shadows and unpredictability. It is exactly through these moments of imperfection that the works achieve their emotional and deeply human presence.

“I wanted to reduce everything to the essentials – just the subject and the simplest form of light. The flashlight allowed me to focus on the emotions in the shadows and isolate the person or object from everything else. This creates a sense of intimacy, but also enhances the mystery.” — Anton Corbijn

Particularly in the portraits of Dave Gahan and Neneh Cherry, one can sense how closely Corbijn’s imagery is connected to sound, rhythm and atmosphere. The flashlight almost begins to function like music itself.

As part of our presentation at THE PHAIR in Turin, we are presenting works from Anton Corbijn’s extraordinary LICHT series.

The works were primarily created during the 1990s, rediscovered only a few years ago. They are now being shown in Italy for the very first time.

For LICHT, Corbijn reduced photography to its absolute essentials. Each image was created using nothing more than a flashlight as the sole light source, in some cases additionally altered through the use of colour filters. The resulting photographs dissolve fixed contours and create an atmosphere suspended between light, movement and darkness.

Much like a painter uses a brush, uses the flashlight to gradually reveal his subjects as they emerge from the surrounding black space. It is precisely within this reduction that the remarkable intensity of the series unfolds.

Light in the works of is far more than a visual device. It structures the image, guides the eye and creates the emotional tension that makes his photographs so compelling.

Despite their elaborate staging, the works possess a remarkable sense of lightness. Beneath the often opulent colour worlds lies a carefully orchestrated composition in which shadow, movement and light are precisely balanced. It is exactly this tension between control and openness that gives the images their distinctive atmosphere.

For THE PHAIR in Turin, Schuller additionally created a new light sculpture, which is being presented publicly for the very first time. With this work, he expands his photographic language consistently into physical space, bringing together photography, light and installation in a new way.

Following THE PHAIR, a major retrospective dedicated to Kristian Schuller will open next month at the renowned , one of Scandinavia’s leading private museums dedicated to photography.

KRISTIAN SCHULLER


With works by we are introducing today the second of the three artists featured in our presentation centered around the theme of light at THE PHAIR in Turin.

Growing up surrounded by theatre stages, costume sketches and creative influences, Schuller developed an early sensitivity for atmosphere, dramaturgy and visual storytelling. After years in Paris and New York, he now lives again with his family in Berlin.

His photographs create emotional spaces somewhere between memory, dream and staging. It is precisely this deliberate interplay between imagination and reality that gives his works their distinctive presence.

For our presentation at THE PHAIR, we are showing a selection of works that offer a first glimpse into this unique visual universe, which we will continue introducing over the coming days.

Born in Italy in 1968, Michelangelo Di Battista developed a visual language that moves seamlessly between fashion photography, portraiture and cinematic storytelling.

His photographs are characterized by a remarkable sensitivity to light, atmosphere and staging. Fashion is never treated as something merely decorative, but becomes part of a larger narrative. Gesture, body language and composition function almost like elements within a film scene.

Alongside his collaboration with Jake & Dinos Chapman for »Mystery in the Moonlight«, another particularly fascinating body of work emerged through his long standing collaboration with . Bringing together photography, drawing and collage, their works blur the boundaries between fashion imagery and contemporary art in a highly distinctive way.

MICHELANGELO DI BATTISTA


»Mystery in the Moonlight« is a collaboration between Michelangelo Di Battista and Jake & Dinos Chapman, presented as part of our booth at THE PHAIR 2026.

Starring Claudia Schiffer as the central protagonist, the series draws on the visual language of classic Hollywood cinema, film noir, and 1950s B-movies. Each photograph reads like a still from a film whose narrative remains deliberately unresolved, inviting viewers to imagine the story beyond the frame.

A defining element of the works is their conscious embrace of artificiality. Painted backdrops, constructed sets, and theatrical lighting are not concealed but foregrounded, becoming integral components of the image. The photographs hover between glamour and unease, beauty and tension, familiarity and fiction.

Rather than documenting reality, the series constructs its own cinematic universe — a space suspended between film, fashion photography, and contemporary art.

We are delighted to announce our participation in THE PHAIR 2026 at OGR Torino, one of Italy’s most distinctive fairs dedicated to contemporary photography and image based art.

Over the past years, THE PHAIR has established itself as an important platform for collectors, curators and institutions, bringing together photography, video and contemporary visual experimentation within a highly curated format. Set within the remarkable industrial architecture of , the fair has become an integral part of Turin’s growing position as a center for contemporary image culture.

We are particularly proud to have been part of the fair’s international board for several years, contributing not only to its ongoing dialogue and development, but also to its public and talk program together with international institutions, curators and artists.

For this year’s presentation, we bring together three very different artistic positions united by a shared cinematic sensibility and a highly individual approach to light, atmosphere and staging: , and .

We begin with Michelangelo Di Battista and his collaboration with Jake & Dinos Chapman. Pictured here is one work from the series “Mystery in the Moonlight”, featuring Claudia Schiffer as protagonist.

Over the coming days, we will share more about both the artist and the series presented at our booth.
