“Soviet skateboards—what we dreamed of, what we skated on, what will forever remain in our memories.”
You are holding in your hands the publication “Skateboards of the USSR,” which features photos and information about 102 models of popular and unusual skateboards, manufactured in the Soviet Union and exhibited at the Skateboarding Museum (Minsk, Belarus). And with the words of Miki Vuckovich SKATE NERDS OF THE WORLD, UNITE! If you’re a skater of a certain age and wonder how skateboarding developed on the other side of the , “Skateboards Of The USSR” by Museum Of Skateboarding (Minsk, Belarus) Founder Gleb Bentsiovski will answer all your Cold War questions. I helped with the English translation, so international readers can learn how Soviet heavy industry took on the State-ordered mandate to manufacture happiness for the people—in this case, through the manufacture of skateboards. Filling 300-pages, the book includes photos and history of more than 180 skateboards, designed and built in several Soviet Republics in the 1970s and 80s, and featuring some very eclectic designs and material choices (often, the manufacturers had no choice). But ultimately, these are the skateboards that brought skateboarding to kids in the and laid the foundation for thriving skate scenes in all of the former Soviet Republics/now independent states. Give a Follow for updates on the book’s release.

On April 23, 1976—50 years ago—the Palast der Republik opened to the public and was also prominently featured on the 100 Mark note as a symbol of GDR pride for this architectural landmark. It served as the parliament of the GDR until early 1990 and was soon closed due to asbestos contamination.
In 1997, a group of skateboarders managed to get inside and created a winter skate hideout, though they were arrested shortly after. Following this, years of asbestos removal began. By 2004, parts of the building briefly reopened for cultural events, including skateboard and BMX sessions.
However, in 2002, the German parliament had already voted to demolish the building. Demolition began in 2006, but a large amount of the smooth marble was saved—thanks in part to skateboarders—and later reused in 2012 for the skatepark “Vogelfreiheit” at Tempelhofer Feld.
Today, the Berlin City Palace, home to the Humboldt Forum, stands where the Palast der Republik once stood. The Humboldt Forum recently featured an exhibition with rare film footage from the East German secret police (“Stasi”), showing a skateboarder and a roller skater riding in front of the former palace entrance—a striking and memorable scene.
If you’re interested in East and West skateboarding history, come in June to see the exhibition SKATER & ROLLBRETTFAHRER Berlin — 10.06.2026 – 04.04.2027.

Nice video from the Flexible Flyer Sled production. Samuel Leeds Allen patented the Flexible Flyer in 1888 in Cinnaminson, New Jersey, using local children and adults to test prototypes.Allen’s company flourished by selling these speedy and yet controllable sleds. Latter also added Ski to the production

Just scored a rare Mifa BMX bike for the archives! But as it’s cold as f**k 🥶🧊 in Berlin right now I think it’s # better to show some winter toys 🛷 and tell a little story of the evolution of our beloved rolling toys. There is a special chapter inside the amazing Boards book 📖 by that highlights the influence of skateboarding into snowboarding 🏂 if you wanna know more about it!
