This batik painting in our World Cultures collection is “not only a craft but also a significant cultural artefact.”

Beulah Oluwadamilola Abu, a Master's graduate in Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies at Ulster University, conducted research on the batik artwork in our World Cultures collection. Batik is an intricate wax-resist dyeing technique used for centuries to create vibrant patterns on fabric.

In Nigeria, particularly among the Yoruba people, “batik is more than decoration, it tells stories of identity, culture, and community.”

"If you had 30 seconds to sum up your whole time as a nurse, what do you think you would say?"

Today is ❤️‍🩹🩹🩺

Curator of Modern History, Rebecca Laverty, spent time with nurses who dedicated their careers to the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald, Co. Down, hearing about their years of service.

Thank you to the nurses who gave their time to tell us their stories, and all those in the profession who have dedicated their lives to healthcare.

It's time to celebrate a collection reborn 💃

The Ulster Museum’s current collection of Fashion and Textiles is made up of around five thousand objects, ranging from sixteenth-century needlework to contemporary designer outfits.

The beauty of this collection belies a tragic past. The collection has been painstakingly rebuilt, almost entirely from scratch, from the ashes of a previous, far larger collection of dress and textiles destroyed by a fire during the conflict in and around Northern Ireland known as ‘The Troubles’.

How did we get here? Join Curator of Fashion and Textiles, Charlotte McReynolds, as she retraces the journey from ashes to fashion → https://bit.ly/ACollectionReborn
