On 17th October, we’re delighted to welcome renowned artist Valda Jackson MBE for a creative workshop at the Ulster Museum.

To mark the 75th anniversary of the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush to the UK, Jackson was commissioned by the Royal Mint to design a commemorative 50 pence coin. In the workshop, people aged 16-24 will create their own original designs to take home - or donate their creations to the Museum collection!

Whether you are an experienced maker or simply curious to try something new, this is an opportunity to work with one of the UK's most accomplished artists, explore stories of heritage, identity and belonging, and get creative.

Our collection represents a wide range of sports, from rugby and hurling to dancing and golf.

The East Belfast GAA team formed in 2020. They are a cross-community team who actively promote cooperation and inclusion, as evidenced by their motto: together, le Chéile, thegither.

Calling all Key Stage 3 educators!

Do your students enjoy gaming, creating, problem solving, and learning new digital skills?

We’re delighted to announce we’re accepting expressions of interest for STEAM Studio workshops for the 26/27 academic year!

STEAM Studio is a digital skills initiative developed by Liberty IT in partnership with National Museums NI and the Nerve Centre, immersing students in the Ulster Museum’s Applied Art collection and empowering them to become Digital Makers by designing, coding and creating their own arcade game.

Expression of interest is open 21st September -1st October, and applications are welcomed from all post-primary schools across Northern Ireland. Liberty IT is generously reimbursing the cost of your school’s bus hire to ensure that as many schools as possible have the opportunity to take part!

On this day in 1890, Elsa Schiaparelli was born ✨

Schiaparelli began her career at the age of 22 when, lacking money for a ball gown, she made a dress from a single piece of fabric. While the style of ‘underwear as outwear’ is associated with the 1980s, this dress from 1947 shows that Schiaparelli had experimented with the risqué idea many years earlier.

You belong in a museum, but Sully belongs in a Disney film - he disnae belong in our cannon!

Object Conservator and punmaker Shannon Campbell documented an unusual day in the life of a conservator, when she had to remove Sully from a breech block.

Did you know? A breech block is that part of a cannon that stops up the opening of the chamber where the cannonballs are inserted. This breechblock comes from ‘La Girona’, a warship in the Spanish Armada that sank off the cost of County Antrim in 1588.

‘Partial Eclipse’, Alice Berger Hammerschlag 🌒

Alice Berger Hammerschlag was an abstract artist active in Northern Ireland from the later 1940s until her death in 1969. ‘Partial Eclipse’ is one of her more representative works - if you're lucky with cloud coverage in your area, perhaps you'll be able to see life imitate art! Clouds or no clouds, the celestial dance of the moon and sun continues to inspire today.

🎻 The Fleadh Cheoil may be coming to an end, but we’re keeping the ceol and craic going at our next Museum Late on Thursday 20th August, part of the Fleadh Fringe Festival!

Enjoy Irish trad musicians performing throughout the art galleries, Le Chéile bringing their blend of trad, jazz and blues to the Belfast Room, metallic embossing of Celtic emblems, St Brigid Cross making and plenty more surprises across the museum.
