On this day in 1859, the clock tower at the Houses of Parliament officially started keeping time. While most people know it today as Big Ben, that nickname actually comes from the great bell inside the tower, which wouldn't ring out for the first time until 11 July that same year. 🕰️

More than 165 years later, it's still one of the world's most recognisable landmarks and an enduring symbol of London. 🇬🇧

Bonus fact: Despite the nickname, "Big Ben" originally referred to the bell itself, not the tower. The tower is now officially known as the Elizabeth Tower.

On this day in 1951, the legendary Oliver Cromwell was completed at Crewe Works. One of only 55 locomotives built in the Britannia Class, it remains an icon of Britain’s railway heritage. 🚂

At Brighton Toy and Model Museum, you can admire an extraordinary 1:12-scale working model of Oliver Cromwell, expertly crafted by renowned locomotive builder J. W. Airton of Rotherham around 1993.

This award-winning coal-fired steam locomotive is a remarkable feat of engineering and craftsmanship. Built on a 5-inch gauge track, it faithfully recreates the original locomotive down to the finest details. Airton took extensive measurements and photographs of the full-sized engine, even matching the authentic Brunswick green paint from an original sample.

From its superheated copper boiler and scale cab fittings to the leather-covered driver’s seat, wooden fireman’s seat, and even a miniature kettle and teapot, every element reflects an astonishing dedication to authenticity. The tender is equally impressive, complete with accurately modelled coal space, water tank, and hand-feed pump.

This miniature masterpiece is not to be missed!

On this day in 1908, Ian Fleming was born. The British author would go on to create James Bond, one of the most enduring and influential characters in modern fiction and film. 🕵️‍♂️🍸

Among the most celebrated pieces of Bond memorabilia ever produced is Corgi Toys’ Aston Martin DB5, released in late 1965 to coincide with the height of Bond’s popularity. Complete with working gadgets inspired by the film car, the model became an extraordinary commercial success, selling more than 750,000 units in just seven weeks and selling out entirely by Christmas Day that year.

Interestingly, the model was originally intended to be finished in silver, matching the on-screen vehicle. However, Corgi executives felt the colour appeared too plain in miniature form and made a last-minute decision to produce it in gold instead, most likely inspired by the success of Goldfinger, which was released the previous year. 🎬

Today, the Corgi DB5 remains one of the most iconic toy cars ever made.
