What if objects could communicate? 🔊

In COMMS FAIL, Roy Claire Potter transforms sculptural props, including large translucent drawings, into sounding objects, with audio carried through their surfaces.

Sound moves through objects, surfaces and bodies. Meaning is not only carried by words, but through pattern, rhythm, texture and environment.

Meet artist Mohammed Z. Rahman (.Z.R.supply), who’s joined us for a two-month residency, ahead of their exhibition in our gallery next summer.

Mohammed’s practice brings socio-political and personal histories into conversation through the lenses of magic, oral history and the domestic. During their residency, they’ll be working on a series of new large-scale paintings and meeting with local groups and individuals to share their practice, learn more about the local communities, and learn about Cardiff, its people and its histories.

“Being able to bring [...] iterative ways of working into the foreground of the practice is a really important development for me. As an autistic person, I think quite a lot of the ways that I’ve worked have been a little bit like a one-man band. The commission offered an opportunity to develop ways of working in teams.”

Join us for the opening of COMMS FAIL by artist writer and performer, Roy Claire Potter on Friday 26 June, 6-8pm.

Developed with fellow autistic artists, radio astronomers and musicians, COMMS FAIL combines research on solar flares and electromagnetic pulse weapons with the shortwave radio’s place in dystopian fiction, moving across performance, radio, exhibition and publication.

Step into a narrative artwork about communications failure, electromagnetised bodies, and what connection looks like after catastrophe.
