100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum Museum dedicated to preserving the stories and memories of the American involvement in World War Two based at Thorpe Abbotts.

We are housed in the original airfield control tower and surrounding atmospheric buildings. The 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum is a moving testament to the Americans who came to Thorpe Abbotts in Norfolk to fight alongside the allies during World War Two.

100th Bomb Group veteran family member Debbie Dalton lays a wreath in remembrance on behalf of the museum at the Memorial Day commemoration at the Cambridge American Cemetery, Madingley on Monday. She was accompanied by museum volunteers at what proved to be an incredibly moving day. Debbie’s uncle, Ward Dalton, was killed in September 1943, he was a Navigator with the 349th Bomb Squadron. Afterwards, there was the opportunity to visit the resting places of the men of the 100th in order for volunteers to pay their respects.

Given the very sad news of the passing of Trustee, friend and one of the originals of the museum, Richard Gibson, the flag was flown at half mast at the museum at the weekend. The other photo was from 2020 when Richard was building the new stage at Thorpe Abbotts Visitor Centre. He had been involved in a huge range of projects since the late 1970’s. The news of Richard’s passing was shared in our post last Thursday.

Thorpe Abbotts Veteran family visit. Helen Madden Johnson is shown on the roof of the Tower with partner David during their visit to the museum. Her Father, Sgt George Madden arrived at Thorpe Abbotts in December 1943 and successfully completed his tour the following July on a mission to Munich. He was a Top Turret Gunner/Engineer and flew with the 351st Bomb Squadron.

It is with great sadness that the 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum, Thorpe Abbotts announces the passing of Trustee, volunteer and friend, Richard Gibson.The museum and the whole 100th family will miss him terribly. Richard was one of the team that created a museum from the decaying shell of the tower at Thorpe Abbotts. He was well known for his film shows, his sense of humour and extensive knowledge. Until just a few weeks ago he was regularly at his computer maintaining the museum’s photographic archive. The photos show Richard working on the renovation of the Control Tower back in the 1970’s and of him in recent times on the same spot. Rest in peace Richard.

Veteran family visit to Thorpe Abbotts. We had the pleasure of welcoming Joy Lugo (shown in conversation with Ron Batley) and her husband Danny to the Museum last week. John Justice was Joy’s Grandfather. Lt Justice flew on ‘Pasadena Nena’ shot down on the Munster mission of 10th October 1943. He evaded capture and with the help of the Resistance, made his way to Gibraltar.

After exploring the museum and with the permission of the landowner Joy and Danny visited the 349th Bomb Squadron taxiway and hardstand 17 which may have been one of the hardstands on which B-17 ‘Pasadena Nena’ stood.

Thorpe Abbotts - Veteran Family visit on Sunday. The museum was delighted to host a visit from Frederick Lynch and husband Victor. Frederick’s Great Uncle was S/Sgt Robert. J. Lynch, left waist gunner with the 351st Bomb Squadron on ‘Sexy Suzy Mother of Ten’ also named ‘Holy Terror’. The plane was in collision with a German fighter on the Munster mission of 10/10/1943 and Robert Lynch was sadly killed in action along with several other crew members.
