100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum

Museum dedicated to preserving the stories and memories of the American involvement in World War Two based at Thorpe Abbotts.

We are housed in the original airfield control tower and surrounding atmospheric buildings. The 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum is a moving testament to the Americans who came to Thorpe Abbotts in Norfolk to fight alongside the allies during World War Two.

Thorpe Abbotts veteran family visit. We were delighted to welcome the family of T/Sgt Ignacio J. R Pina who toured the museum and locality in the company of volunteers. They were a very engaged and interested family with a lot to share of their memories of Ignacio. T/Sgt Pina flew with the 349th Bomb Squadron as a Top Turret Gunner/Engineer.

Remembering Richard Gibson 1942 - 2026. We are thinking of Richard’s family today. He was a huge part of the museum from the 1970’s until he passed recently. His contribution to honouring the memory of the men of the 100th Bomb Group was monumental. He is on the right in the photo. Rest in Peace dear friend.

Thorpe Abbotts yesterday - American visitors with the National WWII Museum tour are shown on the balcony of the Control Tower. A very engaging group which included the family of S/Sgt Henry E Nangle who flew with the 100th Bomb Group as Togglier/Nose Gunner completing 23 missions before the wars end.

Veteran family visit. S/Sgt George Mast was a Waist Gunner with the 351st Bomb Squadron, 100th Bomb Group. He arrived at Thorpe Abbotts in October 1944 and flew combat missions until April 1945 going on to fly Chowhound missions. His family toured the museum in the company of volunteers.

Colonel Jonathan C. O’Dell, Deputy Commander of the 100th Air Refuelling Wing at Mildenhall is shown visiting the Museum at Thorpe Abbotts with his family and friends recently. They spent the day touring the Control Tower and associated buildings in the company of Volunteers. Their deep interest and knowledge in the history of the airfield made the visit very special. The present day 100th Air Refuelling Wing has a rich heritage dating back to their successor unit, the 100th Bomb Group which did so much to help secure the freedom of Europe in the dark days of World War Two. Colonel O’Dell is Deputy Commander at 100th Air Refueling Wing, Royal Air Force Mildenhall, supporting four U.S. Air Force major command flying programs and more than 16,800 military, civilian, dependent, and retiree personnel

Visit the 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum this Fathers Day. We are open from 10am to 4pm with FREE entry for all. We have an amazing collection of exhibits covering the history of the ‘Bloody Hundredth’ and we have a cafe and shop on site. The museum opens every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday until mid November and every Wednesday from now until the end of September. A great day out for all the family.

Thorpe Abbotts Veteran family visit. Elaine Justice Hill, daughter and Corie Zamora, grand daughter, of John ‘Jack’ Justice are shown in the company of museum volunteers during their recent tour of the museum. Lt Justice flew on ‘Pasadena Nena’, he was shot down on the famous Munster mission of 10 October 1943. He evaded capture and with the help of the Resistance, made his way to Gibraltar. The other photos include one of John amongst a group of airmen being awarded the DFC at an award ceremony

Veteran family visit to Thorpe Abbotts. Jean and husband Les Hale are shown in the first photo at the entrance to site 3 where Jean’s father T/Sgt Thomas Cuccaro would have spent time whilst at Thorpe Abbotts (the wartime image is taken in the same place with Copilot Lt Anthony Pecyk in the photo). Thomas Cuccaro was a Ball Turret Gunner with the 349th Bomb Squadron, 100th Bomb Group. He went down on his very first mission which was to Paris on 3rd September 1943 when his aircraft ‘Torchy’ was involved in a mid air collision with another B17, ‘Sunny’ which crashed with a heavy loss of life. The Tail Gunner on ‘Torchy’ was killed and Thomas became a POW spending the remainder of the war in captivity. Volunteers were delighted to accompany Jean and Les on a tour of the museum and former airfield site on what proved to be a very memorable day.
