Beyond the Image Gallery Presents SOUND DIMENSION.
Opens on Friday 2nd October. From 11am till 4pm

Nestled in the tranquil, wooded surroundings of the Thornham Estate in Suffolk, Beyond the Image Gallery has spent over two decades breaking down the barriers of traditional art spaces. Run as a not-for-profit collective by local volunteer artists, the gallery has built a reputation for showcasing authentic, human-led visual stories.

This season, the collective is challenging the boundaries of the printed medium with their new themed exhibition: SOUND DIMENSION.

What Happens When Still Images Speak?

Historically, photography is treated as a silent art form—a single, quiet moment frozen in time. SOUND DIMENSION flips that script. In this showcase, the members of the collective use exclusively still images to explore the unseen, audible rhythms of the world around us.

Rather than just inviting visitors to look at a print, the exhibition evokes a sensory crossover, asking audiences to visually tune into the soundscapes implied by each frame:

Visual Echoes: Landscapes that capture the heavy, quiet tension before a storm, or macro shots that suggest a subtle, rhythmic buzz.
The Cadence of the Frame: Street photography and abstract compositions structured to mimic musical beats, sharp crescendos, or smooth, melodic lines.
A "Slow Look" Experience: In an era of rapid digital scrolling, SOUND DIMENSION encourages visitors to pause. By looking deeply at these silent images, viewers are challenged to discover the internal soundtrack and emotional resonance embedded within the textures of the paper.
A Community Space for Innovation

True to the gallery’s core mission that photography belongs to everyone, the exhibition blends technical expertise with raw, intuitive creative talent. Alongside the primary collective exhibition, the gallery’s dedicated guest spaces feature fresh local voices interpreting the sonic theme in their own unique styles.

A new small wall exhibition opens on Friday, 2nd October at 11 am.
An exhibition called 'INCONGRUITY' by Ian Scrivener.
I attended Ipswich School of Art way back in the 1970’s and am now retired from a variety of jobs, one being a sculptor's assistant during the 1980’s.
I’ve never lost my love of art in its many guises, but retirement in 2021 allowed me to get back into it again. ‘Incongruous’ is a first attempt at a collection with the triple themes of recycling, decluttering and waste. I only allowed myself to use materials in my workshop/studio or from items thrown away, and used them to show nature reclaiming discarded waste (with the bonus of reducing the number of timber offcuts from my own supply)
