Blackthorn, 1892
William Morris (1834-1896)/
John Henry Dearle (1859-1932)
Jeffrey & Co. for Morris & Co.

This intricate design reflects close observation of hedgerows, woodlands and meadows around Morris’s home Kelmscott Manor. It is attributed to both Morris and Dearle, who were collaborating closely together at this time.

"A lovely day at our Limnerslease. Voices of robins singing a chorus, monotone of gentle cooing doves in our wood & garden. I stand & worship in the early sun."

This week's Art UK theme is dogs to celebrate International Dog Day (which was yesterday, but we can ignore that!) 🐶

Mary Watts loved dogs, owning quite a few during her lifetime. We have a wonderful selection of glass slide negatives in our collection which give us a snippet of what everyday life was like for the Wattses. In this selection, we found two lovely photographs of Mary and Lilian (the Watts's ward) with their four-legged friends.
