🎉 We have been awarded funding from The National Lottery Community Fund to bring Flatland: Circulate Materials Reuse Library to life!

Through workshops, artist led activity, material collections and community making, we’ll explore how materials that might otherwise become waste can be kept in use and transformed into something new.

Working with artists, makers, young people, local residents, cultural organisations and businesses, Flatland: Circulate will bring materials, skills and ideas into circulation.

Culminating this autumn with a public opening of the Reuse Library and a showcase of artworks made from reclaimed materials.

David Gilbert, Slips

Flatland Projects is proud to present a major new commission this Autumn by Los Angeles based artist David Gilbert, marking the artist’s first exhibition in the UK. The exhibition follows and connects with the release of the artist’s first monograph, Lilies published by Zolo Press in early 2026. At Flatland, Gilbert presents a body of photographs taken in his domestic studio. Cut paper which hangs, dangles, bends and slumps is the central material depicted in these photographs, and the images act as portals into the temporal sculptural sets constructed by Gilbert.

This commission has been generously supported by Arts Council England, The Bridget Riley Art Foundation, and Rother District Council. Curatorial research has been supported by Fluxus Art Projects, and integral support has come from the David Gilbert supporters circle: Elizabeth Rickard Shah, Marla and Jeffrey Michaels and Chris Sharp Gallery, LA.

David Gilbert (b. 1982, New York, NY) lives and works in Los Angeles. ‘Heav(Gard)en’ gathers nine years of writing by researcher Tawfik Naas. Developed alongside his research practice, these texts began as a place to hold what could not always be housed within physical works: fragments, metaphors, observations, and moments that continued to ask for form after an artwork had reached its limits.

Published alongside Manifestations for an Eternal Spring at Flatland Projects, Heav(Gard)en offers another way of entering Naas’ research into the ways we observe, remember, and (re)experience history. Rather than functioning as documentation or explanation, the writings operate as parallel sites of enquiry, where history, family, religion, landscape, and language are encountered through metaphor, repetition, and return.

Across the collection, words shift in meaning, ideas reappear in altered forms, and moments of reflection give way to daydream. Together, the texts trace the evolving methodologies that have shaped Naas’ practice over the past nine years, inviting readers to move through research as a living landscape that continues to unfold.

Flatland is delighted to present on the occasion of the Bexhill Art Weekender ‘Not repeat as in replicate, repeat as in ritual’, a film screening of 3 moving images works curated by Olivia Du Vergier. Screening at Flatland Projects 15th & 16th August 2026, 11:00-16:00.

Featuring (in image order): ‘Intermittent and Continuous’ (2025) Olivia Hird; ‘Like Dadima Like Smriti’ (2019), Smriti Mehra; & ‘The ghost of Mr. Bawky’ (2025) Esther Carlin.

In the space that contains your absence, where patterns repeat. Retrace your steps, walk the
same route, remember every turn, hold the remnants in your hands, pick them up, bear their
weight, feel their form, turn them over again and again, put them back, store them away,
find them again one day.

In all three of the films featured in this programme, we find repetition woven with memory. Repeated words, sounds, gestures, habits. A father and daughter revisit old material, piecing together a shared story. A granddaughter weighs up her inheritance. A woman moves through a vast landscape, blending past and present as she listens. Through the redoing comes a new doing.

Olivia Hird is a self-shooting filmmaker, facilitator and researcher, bridging creative and care-based approaches, working across nonfiction film and community mental health. Trained in visual anthropology, Olivia’s practice is guided by personal stories that explore how people relate to place, time, themselves and each other. Her films have been screened at BAFTA and BIFA qualifying festivals.
Olivia has taught at the Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology, University of Manchester (2025), worked as Production Manager for Open City Documentary Festival (UCL), participated in the HOME Artist Film Lab (2022), HOME Artist Lab (2024) and the Sheffield DocFest Filmmaker Challenge (2026).

Only 11 more days left of Tawfik Naas’ monumental commission ‘Manifestations for an Eternal Spring’ we have been overwhelmed by the visitor figures for this exhibition, returning visitors who spend time in this contemplative body of research which Naas has graced the South Coast of England with.

The gallery is open Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 12-4pm.
