For artists and galleries, our sense of community isn’t just a social safety-net, it is the very infrastructure that keeps our creative ecosystem alive!
As artists, our job is usually very solitary. As a gallery, we cannot function as an isolated shopfront. We cultivate connections with creatives and collectors and we support each other.
Ultimately, art is a conversation, a dialogue between us all and Open Studios events are a big part of that supportive community.

The next two weekends is a celebration of this, with over 200 artists and makers right across our beautiful North Yorkshire, opening their workspaces to the public. You’ll find many of the Saltbox Gallery artists as you explore along the way too, so come pick up your brochure from us, plan a little tour route (with a fabulous lunch stop of course!) and get curious!

Constellations of Form
Our all new exhibition opens TODAY with the magical combination of the etching & sculptural work of Louisa Noyd, from Cheshire and the ceramic and sculptural work of Yorks Kate Buckley.

What an appropriate day to be welcoming JENNY FERMOR to our Saltbox family of artists and makers!

Jenny is a British artist living and working in Spain. Originally from Devon in the UK, where she graduated in Fine Art Jenny now paints vivid, sun-filled landscapes from her studio in Madrid.

​Jenny says of her work “I am a bit obsessed with the warmth and glow of the sun against a wall, and with the geometric shapes formed by the contrasting shadows. I like to build my paintings around that contrast, balancing the elements- the layers, the dark and light values, the translucent and the opaque, until I find harmony in the composition.
​My paintings are a combination of observation and inspiration, and they float somewhere between realism and abstract.”

These pieces are perfectly formed, at 33x33cm in their cradle frames, so a slice of shimmering landscape into any home!

Following a very successful York Open Studios, our lovely Lucie Wake has brought us a fresh collection of new paintings for your walls!

Lucie has really found her tribe in the York art community and especially at Pool Bridge Farm wild swimming. This is reflected in her art….you can feel the cool calm of sunset across the pools and the deeply healing cold waters.

Welcoming Jo Williams to the Saltbox family of artists and makers!

Based on the Wirral, Jo has been a professional potter for over thirty years and describes her process “I currently make contemporary functional decorative ceramics using white, grogged earthenware clay. Most of my work is made on the potters wheel, then the outer surface is scuffed to create a velvety texture, then oxides are applied before firing. I glaze the inside in a soft contrasting glaze while the surface fires to an inky finish. I enjoy playing with pattern and mark making but continue to experiment with different materials to apply to the clay surface. Its exciting to experiment with different materials, clay bodies and firing temperatures and its an aspect of making ceramics that will never leave me.”

I love the feel of these and the inkiness of the oxides!

Here at the Saltbox Gallery we pride ourselves on bringing you something new and different, that you wouldn’t find in most Yorkshire gallery shops. We rehang the gallery every month and search right across the country to find new goodies for you to Artify your home with! To this end we have met some incredible artists, including, here, Sandy A Powell and Bill Bate, who we met at the Wimbledon Art Fair.
Which is your favourite? The colourful, decorative dancing flowers of Sandy, or the mysterious, swimming figures of Bill?

This weekend! Meet the Makers event with blacksmiths Lucille Scott and, here, Maxine Hunt.
Set out in our sculpture garden Maxine and Lucille are here to meet you, talk about their processes, skills and tools and demo some copper work.
(Please note there will not be a live blacksmithing demo for set up and health & safety reasons)
Both blacksmiths will be bringing a broad range of their works including decorative, sculptural works for your home and garden…and Maxine is bringing one her famous scrolling benches!
Do pop in any time. We are open for you 10.30 to 4.30. See you soon!
