Made in the Marches Gallery sponsored the Kington Walking Festival’s ‘Introduction to Astrophotography’ walk – a first for the gallery and for the festival. Devised and led by Rebecca Reynolds, here is her report with some wonderful photos!

“By 9pm on the chilly, cloudless night of Thursday 21st September 2023, four adventurous walkers had stopped with Nigel Sheath and Rebecca Reynolds at the top of Hergest Ridge. Here for an introduction to photographing the beauty of a star-filled sky, and with a virtually moonless night ahead, the sky deepened from dark blues to black, and the visible universe revealed itself in breathtaking clarity.

By 11pm, we had photographed the International Space Station as it flew silently overhead. We had captured the beauty of our galaxy, the Milky Way, as well as our neighbour, Andromeda. We caught the gas giant Jupiter rising in the east and some of our favourite constellations - such as the Plough and the Little Plough (Ursa Major and Ursa Minor), as seen here in Jim Smith’s superb photograph.

All agreed that it had been a successful night and our hopes are that the introduction to astrophotography will inspire all to carry on and to enjoy the wonderful dark sky that we are so fortunate to be able to see here. Nigel and Rebecca say a huge thank you to Kington’s Made in the Marches Gallery for their support. Situated at the top of the town, Made in the Marches is a superb place to spend the daylight hours, where you can browse and buy unique pieces of art, all created by local artists. Many, many thanks to Annie and all at the Gallery.”

2023 is an exciting new year for the Made in the Marches Gallery co-operative. We have 13 artists and makers who are committed to creating a wonderful place full of beautiful art and craft from artists in and around the Marches… and sometimes a little beyond!

Using a dedicated part of the gallery, each month we will be showcasing at least one wall artist, 3D artist and jeweller, whose work will be displayed alongside art created by members of the co-operative and regular visiting artists. Details of all the exhibitions and artists will be posted on social media every month.

We start our year on Saturday 1st April and we are thrilled to exhibit Mariette Voke – a painter from the Forest of Dean, Jane Bisby – a ceramicist from Colva and Lucy Goff – who makes ply-split braided jewellery from Shropshire.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to our special place.
