Before cars filled Hertford’s streets, journeys through the town looked very different. 🐎

For centuries, The Salisbury Arms welcomed travellers, traders and locals arriving by horse and carriage - becoming part of everyday life in Hertford long before modern high streets existed.

Today, it still stands proudly at the heart of the town, connecting Hertford’s past with the present and reminding us how much history still surrounds us every day. 💚

Do you remember visiting The Salisbury Arms, or is there another Hertford building that instantly makes you think of the town’s history? 👀

3 things you probably didn’t know about everyday life in historic Hertford…🏦

1️⃣ Before modern refrigeration, huge blocks of ice were stored underground in specially built ice houses to help preserve food throughout the year. The Hertford Castle ice house is still visible in the Moat Garden (just off Castle Street).

2️⃣ Many Victorian toys, clothes and pieces of furniture were handmade and designed to last for generations - not just seasons.

3️⃣ Long before phones and social media connected communities, Hertford’s inns, markets and local shops were where news, stories and conversations spread fastest.

It’s fascinating to see how people adapted, connected and lived long before the modern conveniences we rely on today.

Which fact surprised you the most?

Before chain stores and online shopping, Hertford’s town centre was built on local businesses, familiar faces and community spirit.💚

For generations, independent shops and family-run businesses shaped daily life in the town - becoming part of people’s routines, memories and conversations for decades.

While Hertford has changed over time, many of those stories still live within the streets we walk through today.

Which Hertford business do you remember most from years gone by?

Before tablets, television and video games, childhood imagination looked like this.✨

This beautifully detailed doll’s house from 1834 may look very different to the toys children grow up with today, but the imagination behind it hasn’t changed at all.🏡

For generations, play has helped children explore creativity, storytelling and the world around them - whether through handcrafted wooden furniture in the 1800s or digital games and modern toys today.

Objects like this remind us that Hertford’s history isn’t disconnected from modern life. In many ways, it still lives within the experiences families share today.💚

What toy or childhood object instantly takes you back to your childhood?
